Reported pipeline explosion rocks parts of Missouri

Source: WDAF-TV Kansas City, MO

NEAR HOUSTONIA, Mo. — An overnight explosion at the Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Company, near Houstonia, lit up the sky for miles around. Fox 4 viewers from more than 30 miles away have reported seeing the fireball in the sky.

Emergency crews have reported evacuations following the explosion. As of early this morning, there had not been any injuries reported — however — the situation is still developing, and local police and media are being swamped with calls for information.

Fox 4 has crews working on this story and will provide updates here and on Fox 4 as soon as they come in. In the meantime, if you have photos to share, please send them to news@wdaftv4.com.

Just three brief paragraphs reporting that the blast happened after a rupture at a compressor station and the company reports no injuries or fatalities.

Another news network local affiliate (CBS - St. Louis) reports the gas company is requesting a 5-mile perimeter. Crews from that affiliate are enroute to the scene and should have updates later.

Unfortunately, WDAF-TV (FOX 4) had some of the earliest (if not the earliest) coverage of the explosion.

UPDATE, 2:38 a.m.: Pettis County Sheriff Kevin Bond said initially that residents within a 3-mile radius of the explosion were evacuated, but that has since been reduced to a half-mile radius. Firefighters from approximately ten stations are currently working to extinguish the flames, but they were delayed while waiting for the pipeline company to shut off gas through the pipeline.

Bond confirmed earlier reports that no workers were present nor were any injuries reported.

UPDATE, 3:37 a.m.: Seven buildings are currently on fire at a swine farm near the explosion. The flames are being fueled by hay, according to reporter Sarah Hollenbeck.

Because of course they don't want us to see just how much damage really happened.

I had just fallen asleep and woke up to the sound. I wasn't sure what it was at the time, until I got up and turned on the tv.
