Most dangerous temps in decades push across US

Source: AP-Excite

By STEVE KARNOWSKI and RICK CALLAHAN

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The coldest, most dangerous blast of polar air in decades gripped the Midwest and pushed toward the East and South on Monday, closing schools and day care centers, grounding flights and forcing people to pull their hoods and scarves tight to protect exposed skin from nearly instant frostbite.

Many across the nation's midsection went into virtual hibernation, while others dared to venture out in temperatures that plunged well below zero.

"I'm going to try to make it two blocks without turning into crying man," said Brooks Grace, who was bundling up to do some banking and shopping in downtown Minneapolis, where temperatures reached 23 below, with wind chills of minus 48. "It's not cold - it's painful."

The mercury also dropped into negative territory in Milwaukee, St. Louis and Chicago, which set a record for the date at minus 16. Wind chills across the region were 40 below and colder. Records also fell in Oklahoma, Texas and Indiana.

My little Chihuahua is used to going for a walk every day, but with the weather in the 20s and 30s, she has not been out. I have plenty of pee pads that she knows how to use. And tomorrow will be another day she stays inside because the temps are going to be in the teens.

He stepped three feet outside, did his thing, and dragged me back in.

He's not stupid.

17 degrees right now. It'll be 5 or less when my wife walks him tomorrow morning.

She'll bundle him up.

Never mind the fact that it's going to be well into the 60's here this weekend. It was 5 degrees this morning where I live in Georgia, we haven't had temperatures this cold in many years, but it used to get this cold in winter semi-regularly. And as far as GLOBAL climate, I see that temperatures in parts of Australia are into the 120's.

I'm in Southern California, where we're embarking on a horrible drought. Everyone's enjoying the warmer than usual temps (except me, I like the cooler weather), but boy are we going to be paying for it this summer (unless we get a deluge of rain). Again, keep safe and warm!

No problem starting the Prius. I went about my normal business and also got to the library and the dry cleaners. I have to tend to my mail and shipping but no problem I did not see many walkers however and the schools were all closed. Tomorrow all will be back to higher temperatures. Iowans are not as tough about this stuff than we ex-Minnesotans.
