Police chief: Options limited in response to union's 'thuggery' video post

Source: Omaha World Herald

Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer responded Tuesday to a video that the Omaha police union shared on Facebook and its website of adults exchanging profanities, insults and sexual comments with a young boy wearing a diaper.

He said a Nebraska Supreme Court ruling on union speech limits his ability to intervene with what the union chooses to post on its website or Facebook.

"In reviewing the standards set by the Supreme Court, my ability as the chief of police to initiate disciplinary oversight regarding 'union speech' is restricted," Schmaderer said in a statement.

"I want to make it explicit and clear that the views expressed on the OPOA Facebook page do not necessarily reflect the official stance of the Omaha Police Department. I strongly disagree with any postings that may cause a divide in our community or an obstacle to police community relations."

at least in the afscme union any official who causes detriment to the union can be fined or depending on the severity stripped of union rights.

The whole post is about how the cycle of violence and "thuggery" gets perpetuated, that it gets passed from generation to generation and too often begins with children so young.

Not seeing the issue here at all except a whole lot of people with their hair on fire over what is obviously an awful situation for a child which no law at this point appears to be able to cure.

It's sick. It's sad. But there's no law against "thugs" or even convicted criminals from bearing and even keeping their own children.

I don't understand coming to the defense of the very worst of society. The people in the video are thugs and that child doesn't stand a chance of becoming a productive member of society. What is wrong with highlighting truly disgusting behavior, if for no other reason than shame the people who are doing it even though they see nothing wrong with what they did and continue to do.

that's obviously an abusive and unhealthy environment

the police notified Child Protective Services about the video. Hopefully some kind of action can be taken. Verbal abuse like that from adults on a young child can have a terrible negative impact for life.
