Fort Calhoun nuclear plant offline again

Two weeks after the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Station finally came online after nearly three years in a cold shutdown, the Omaha Public Power District shut it down again to deal with some iced-over equipment.
Freezing temperatures caused ice to build up on one of six sluice gates that control the flow of Missouri River water into the plant.
The river water is used to cool and condense steam that has gone through the power turbine; the gates are a safeguard against flooding.
Workers saw the ice built up and noticed the shaft on the sluice gate was bent. The gate couldn't be lowered, so as a precaution, the district shut it all down this morning.
