Most New Jersey voters think its likely Governor Chris Christie was aware of the Fort Lee traffic lane closures before they happened and should resign if this is proven. But voters in the state still think the governor is doing a better job than President Obama.
A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey finds that 54% of Likely New Jersey Voters believe its at least somewhat likely that Christie was aware that traffic lanes onto the George Washington Bridge were being closed as retaliation for the mayor of Fort Lees refusal to support the governors reelection. Thirty-six percent (36%) think its unlikely Christie was aware beforehand. This includes 30% who say its Very Likely he was aware and 17% who say its Not At All Likely. (To see survey question wording, click here.)
Fifty-six percent (56%) of New Jersey voters believe Christie should resign if it is proven that he approved of retaliation against an elected official who refused to support him. Just 29% disagree, while 15% are not sure.
Not surprisingly, 75% of Democrats think its likely Christie, a Republican, was aware of the Fort Lee retaliation beforehand, but just 34% of GOP voters and 46% of unaffiliated voters agree. Seventy-three percent (73%) of Democrats and 52% of unaffiliated voters believe Christie should resign if he was aware of the lane closures beforehand; 50% of Republicans disagree.

(17,645 posts)and was not against the mayor but the head Dem in the state senate, whose district includees ft lee.
The day before, Christie pulled his colleague's wife's supreme court permanent confirmation because the democrats were blocking his other nominations in payback for him refusing to grant the only black supreme fourt judge permanent status. Confusing, but Rachel Maddow shows a very compelling and persuasive argument, as always, with interviews with all the key people.

(2,640 posts)The opening segment was all about how Benghazi is way worse than Trafficgate. The reasoning is that Christie apologized and fired aides, where Obama and Hillary didn't.

(2,640 posts)But I wouldn't be surprised if he did. The lane closures were such a brazen act that it's hard to believe a top aide would do something that huge without their boss's knowledge or approval.

(44,576 posts)Especially when that boss is such a micromanager, he wasted money on a special election rather than have his name appear on the same ballot as Corey Booker.
The evidence that he knew is that there IS no evidence that he knew. And there is no evidence that he knew because he set it up that way.
If Christie truly hadn't known about it, he would have fired everyone involved last month, not simply "allowed" them to resign. And then he would have called for a federal investigation himself to ensure impartiality.

Either way, his presidential ambitions sleep with the fishes.

Newest description for a repuke: "he's just another Chris Christie."

(423 posts)That means 44 percent of New Jersey voters feel that, even if Christie knew about the conspirators involved in this federal felony, and knew that at least one of them worked in his own office, and knew what they were up to, yet did nothing about it ... even under those circumstances, 44 percent do not want him to resign.

(429 posts)I have no doubt that they worked every angle to get that 44%. I don't know why progressives don't run their own polls.

(21,317 posts)In that one, his chief aide and half of the Conservative Party leadership were caught bribing a Canadian senator, to the tune of 90,000 dollars. Harper has claimed he didn't know anything about it, as Christie is claiming in this scandal. It's interesting to see how similar these are - Harper is also known to be a bully and control freak. Nobody believes him, and I guess nobody believes Christie either.

(4,552 posts)The lane closure before it happened, he SHOULD have immediately started asking questions and demanding action to fix the delays and lane closures when they were in full bloom.
As Gov of the state, he would be expected to take immediate action to mitigate the traffic jams and potential for catastrophy if there had been a major accident or other disaster. His excuse that he didn't know just doesn't jive with the behavior and actions he took after Hurricane Sandy.
Unless he was in a coma, or out of the country when it happened, he has no excuse for not taking action as soon as the jam started.
PERIOD!
So, IOW, he is toast.
