Chris Christie Mentor Says Bridge Scandal Poses Question: Do You Really Want That In Your President?

As a week loaded with questions for and apologies by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) drew to a close, one of his key mentors emerged with doubts about how the George Washington Bridge scandal would affect any 2016 ambitions.

In an interview with the Washington Post published Saturday, former New Jersey Gov. Tom Kean Sr. (R) painted the either-or picture for Christie's presidential hopes, highlighting how the tumult from this traffic issue should raise caution.

“On the one hand, I think he’s got a lot to offer," Kean Sr. said. "I think he’s the most able politician since Bill Clinton. On the other hand, you look at these other qualities and ask, 'do you really want that in your president?'”

Earlier in the week, Kean Sr. expressed similar sentiments to the Associated Press, saying that barring new details, he thought Christie would "survive" the bridge scandal. Yet the events set precedent for a thin margin of error in the future.

I guess Christie didn't think that Kean would get back at him for screwing over his son. Bullies like Christie forget that when they trample over people, they'll encounter these same people on the way down. What goes around, comes around.

What does being a good politician do with 'having something to offer? Nothing.

That quote should make anyone wonder about Kean's own abilities.

Well before any of this happened, a lot of us here (and elsewhere) saw Krusty as the blowhard bully that he is and took issue with many of his policy actions.

Looks like another case of Republican rose-colored glasses to me.

I can't stand bullies. I don't care what Christie has to offer, he is not presidential material

The question is which one, unless by some improbable reason it's Bush III.

(I'm sorry but as a Philadelphian, Tom Kean IS that commercial to me... They must've played it a billion times here back in the '80s since we are South Jersey's media market)

Christie shouldn't fuck with people's children. In this case Kean Jr.'s Poppa is getting his revenge.

But this is one sweet moment I will gladly savor with you, because there are only two scenarios that cane come from this.

ONE: the Tea Party people use this to topple Christie, thus ensuring that the Northern Republicans feel a bad, bad taste in their mouth, as the sons of Dixie like Cruz and Rand Paul remind the Yankees what they think of them.

TWO: Christie hangs on, and leaves a nice big load of material that can be repeated in sound bites again and again and again.

Any Democrat should make a meal of that, and while I make no secret about who I will not vote for in the Democratic Primary, I will be the first to admit that the Clintons could exploit that while standing on their head, then again, so can Warren or O'Malley.

Christie will probably survive as governor, unless there's a smoking gun and irrefutable proof that he was in on the vendetta. What is questionable are his chances in 2016. People may enjoy watching shows like the Sopranos and Jersey Shore, but they don't want those traits in a president. He will now be known as a bully in people's minds. Before, most Americans only knew him as the straight talking governor who guided NJ through Sandy. They didn't know his background.

As of now, I don't know who is enjoying Christie's discomfort the most. It's a toss up between the Democrats and the Tea Party crowd. The Freepers are jumping for joy. They despise him more than the Democrats do.
