Putin Says Gay People At Olympics Must Leave The Children Alone
Source: Associated Press
Russian President Vladimir Putin says gays should feel welcome at the upcoming Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, but they must "leave the children in peace."
Putin told volunteers Friday that gays visiting Sochi "can feel calm and at ease," and vowed that there would be no discrimination at the games. But he emphasized that, according to a law banning homosexual "propaganda" among minors, gays cannot express their views on gay rights issues to anyone underage.
Putin and other politicians have defended the June propaganda law as a protection of child rights, but critics believe that the law discriminates against sexual minorities.

Putin should be worrying about the captain of the Canadian men's curling team.
He does throw a good stone though.

(3,596 posts)Pedophiles are much more likely to be heterosexual than homosexual and perpetrated on young girls much more than on young boys.
Yes there are pedophiles in the LGBT community and I find them disgusting. I have no more compassion or tolerance for them than I do heterosexual pedophiles. Pedophilia is pedophilia.
There is no, repeat no, evidence that homosexuals are more likely to pursue children and engage in pedophilia than heterosexuals.
As a gay man I am not attracted to children. I am attracted to other adult men, period. I might be able to appreciate a young man for his handsomeness, etc. but that does not rise the level of having any sexual interest. That is the same as an adult male saying to a young girl, "you are very pretty" but not with any interest or intention beyond that.
It seems the Russians share the view of some real nut cases around the world that say....homosexuals cannot reproduce so they must recruit. What kind of bullshit is that?
Homosexuals don't need to recruit among heterosexual children or heterosexual adults because heterosexual adults produce homosexual children. Whether you believe it to be 3%, 5% or 10%, a certain percentage of individuals are born with an inherent attraction to members of their own gender and some are born attracted to both genders. Let's just accept 5% as the number. You have 5% of the population that self-identifies as homosexual seeking the other 5% that self-identify as homosexuals. There is no need to recruit.

(8,492 posts)I was wrong. Every time he opens his fucking mouth, a little dark evil place in me wants him attacked by a horde of angry barbarians. I'm not advocating violence, just daydreaming. Hell, they don't even have to touch the little prick. Just watching him cower in fear, bawling like a child, would be satisfaction enough.
Fucking scum.

(33,915 posts)Leave the children alone (the article headline) does not reflect what the article says.
The very brief article is about speech, not action. "Leave the children alone" implies he was feeding into the stereotype of gay (men, mostly) as pedophile.
Insisting that no one express their views on gay rights is wrong, but using a headline which deliberately calls to mind ugly stereotypes is also wrong, especially in this sound byte era where many people don't read past the headline.

Sorry if the fact that Vladimir Putin is a virulent gay-hating puke-tastic bigot is inconvenient.

(33,915 posts)Nothing I said defended the bigot.
My comment was directed at responsible journalism. Headlines ought to accurately reflect the article. I expected to click on the article and read comments he had made about the pedophile stereotype the headline deliberately calls up. The article did not contain those comments. It was addressed to prohibiting a discussion of gay rights with underage individuals.
There is a difference between buying into that stereotype (which I have no doubt Putin does) and writing a headline which implies that at the event being reported on Putin warned gays about acting on that stereotype, when he didn't at that event (or, at least if he did, that is not the content the reporter chose to include).

when he says 'gay people must leave the children in peace' the message is loud and clear for anyone not stuffing cotton in their ears.

Putin's comments, and the entire point of that vile, bigoted piece of shit law is to portray GLBT people as a threat to children.
Thanks for playing.

(33,915 posts)What I am pointing out is that headlines need to accurately reflect the content of the article.
The content of the article was about recent Putin comments which were directed to speech; the headline deliberately called up a different ugly stereotype for the purposes of creating an inflammatory response.
I would have absolutely no issue with an editorial or other opinion piece trashing Putin as buying into that stereotype - it is clear from other events and statements that he does.
What I have a problem with is using a headline on a news article which does not accurately represent the content of the event reported on. I have a problem with it precisely because it was designed to do exactly what it did. At least two people in this thread alone reacted to the headline as if the headline was the news item, rather than the content of the article.

That's the entire point of that 'speech' law.
The 'speech' law is not about speech, it's about homosexuality in general.
