Himmler hoard of letters and diaries discovered in Israel

Source: The Guardian

Lost letters, photographs and diaries by Heinrich Himmler have been discovered in Israel, shedding new light on one of the men most directly responsible for the Holocaust.

The stash of documents from the Nazi era is currently held in a bank vault in Tel Aviv, but has been authenticated by the German federal archive, considered the world's leading authority on material from the period. Its contents are to be published over eight days in the newspaper Welt am Sonntag, starting on Sunday with Himmler's letters to his wife Margarete.

The letters portray a man whose cheerful mood is often at odds with the historical crime he helped to orchestrate. "I am travelling to Auschwitz. Kisses, your Heini," he wrote to his wife before setting off to inspect the concentration camp where he directed the killing of some 1.5 million people, mostly Jews.

Himmler and his wife shared antisemitic feelings, as well as a joint dislike of Weimar-era Berlin. "Poor sweetie, has to tussle with those wretched Jews over money," the SS leader wrote to his spouse on 16 April 1928.

Of course, there are those more concerned with "where have they been" all this time, they will be the first to question what is written. It is good they are being made public, it adds to the continuing mountain that was the Nazi behemoth.

almost 11 hours later, so we can see, how it doesn't fit the "12 hour" rule. Oh wait, 11 is LESS THAN 12.

Post the latest news from reputable mainstream news websites and blogs. Important news of national interest only. No analysis or opinion pieces. No duplicates. News stories must have been published within the last 12 hours. Use the published title of the story as the title of the discussion thread.

Did I miss the part about "re-report?" Weren't you claiming the reason it isn't LBN for DU is because "News stories must have been published within the last 12 hours"? Was this repost not within 12 hours?

ETA: Is The Daily Mail the source for the OP?

If you don't agree with the SOP for LBN then take it up with Skinner in ATA.

I could probably find a re-post the Germany has cross the Rhine.

Point out where it says, "Ref to the last 12 hours refers to when the news broke."

The background to the 12 hour rule is to help prevent LBN getting cluttered.

After the war, two American soldiers collected hundreds of letters and documents from Himmler’s home in Bavaria. According to Die Welt, these papers found their way into the possession of Chaim Rosenthal of Tel Aviv. Rosenthal kept the letters for 40 years under his bed.

In the 1980s, Rosenthal tried to sell the letters after the German Federal Archives had authenticated them. But in 1983 German magazine Stern published excerpts from an alleged Hitler diary that turned out to be fake. In that atmosphere, the world wasn’t interested in more documents from Nazi leaders that could turn out to be forgeries.

When Rosenthal was 90, his son finally persuaded him to hand over the material for publication and, in 2007, Belgian diamond dealer David Lapa bought them for a symbolic fee, Die Welt reported. Lapa gave the documents to his daughter Vanessa, a film director, to make a documentary about them.

In 2011, Vanessa Lapa approached a reporter at Die Welt through her lawyer and proposed that the material be published. Later, at a meeting with a reporter from the paper, she brought Himmler's letters and photographs from 1927 to 1945 – the year he committed suicide.

The existence of the collection was known some 30 years ago

The source of the collection is not entirely clear, and there are several contradictory versions as to the circumstances of its arrival in Israel after Himmler's death.

She has used the materials as the basis for a documentary film – named "Der Anständige" ("The Decent One&quot , due to be screened next month at the Berlin International Film Festival.

“For us," says Gertner, who has been in touch with Vanessa Lapa, "the story is something of a mystery. We have only some of the information. It’s hard to know what exactly happened to the material and how it ended up here. It’s still difficult to know which version is true and whether we really have all the data” related to the collection. “Nor am I certain that the present owner has all the information. We hope that the moment we receive the collection at Yad Vashem, we will have a better idea of its origins,” he added.

We need to know what turns humans into monsters. Actually, we have a pretty good idea, but this will add to the information once historians have properly analyzed it.
