Official Says Residents Affected By Water Crisis Breathing Carcinogen When Showering

Source: WCHS

A West Virginia official said that some residents in areas affected by the water crisis are breathing formaldehyde when showering.

Scott Simonton, an Environmental Quality Board official, told a state legislative panel Wednesday that the crude MCHM that spilled into the Elk River from Freedom industries Charleston facility can break down into formaldehyde.

Formaldehyde is a carcinogen and is more toxic when inhaled. Simonton said the breakdown can happen in the shower. He called respiratory cancer the biggest risk with breathing in the chemical.

Initial testing at Vandalia Grille in Charleston showed traces of the chemical. Other testing showed no traces of formaldehyde, but samples are still being processed.

Man I feel sorry for those people. I've said it once and I'll say it again, the execs who unleashed all this garbage should be forced to be the first to drink the water and shower in the water. Maybe they could give up whatever purified water they have and give it to the residents.

They should have to drink and shower in the toxic liquid or lose everything they have (for the benefit of the people hurt by their negligence) and go to jail for life.

No, they file bankruptcy and won't pay a dime. Fuckers!

My county commissioners are all Democrats. Both our US Senators are Democrats, and so is my US House representative. We have mostly Democrats representing us and yet this calamity occurred. I don't know who else it is that we could have voted for who would have done better.

.... call the shots. Joe Manchin was tripping all over himself trying to say that the
leaked MCHM, a chemical used to process coal, had nothing to do with the coal industry.

You have a some real heavy work to do to turn things around.

14. That is a fair assessment. The coal companies have always controlled the WV state government.

But Manchin is not just a toadie of WV coal and chemical companies. He is an economic neoliberal, just like Reagan and all who came after him. And yes, that includes our two Democratic Presidents, Clinton and Obama.

A lot of us have some real heavy work to do to turn things around.

There are conservative "blue dog" democrats that are the dino's. They align with the republicans on the corporate interest/protecitionism.

Remember the dixicrats? Not all abandoned the democratic party for the gop after the civil rights losses in 1960's
