House passes GOP-backed bill aimed at Obama's 'imperial presidency'
Source: LA Times
WASHINGTON -- The House passed the first of a pair of bills aimed at reining in what Republicans call a pattern of overreach by the executive branch under President Obama.
Democrats decried the base-pleasing measure as a political stunt. Immigration reform advocates said it threatens the administration's deferred action deportation program.
The legislation is a response to what Republicans say has been an "imperial presidency" under Obama -- a term that one conservative lawmaker noted also fit the Nixon administration during the Watergate scandal. Obama's new push to work around Congress using his "pen and phone" strategy only reinforces the need to, as House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) said, "restore balance to our system of government."
"This administration's blatant disregard for the rule of law has not been limited to just a few instances," said House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.). "The president's dangerous search for expanded power appears to be endless."

(8,964 posts)Let's see, a couple weeks ago he was the imperial lawless tyrant, too much like that guy Putin.
Then a week later he was weak and wobbly-kneed, nothing like that guy Putin, who was starting to be perceived as an all right guy in their book.
But hold the phone. Now he's re-embarked on an endless power grab, just like that guy Putin.
How will conservatives be portraying the President in coming weeks? Hard to say, but it will flip-flop 180 degrees any which way, be it the Putin-clone or the anti-Putin.
Stay tuned in to Sean, Rush, Glenn & the rest of the gang for the next exciting episodes of "Obama's Week: Wimp or Weasel?"

(243 posts)How much does this cost the tax payer? How much money has been spent on 50 Repeal Obamacre votes? The RNC should have to reimbuse the American tax payers for this legislative grandstanding that is nothing more than campaign talking points.

(4,473 posts)When the Radical Republicans wanted to impeach Andrew Johnson in 1867, Johnson was having a fight with his Secretary of War, Edwin Stanton. Stanton was the darling of the Radical Republicans, and to keep Johnson from firing him, they passed (over Johnson's veto) the Tenure of Office Act, which said that the President could not remove any official without Senate approval, and for a President to do so was a "high crime and misdemeanor".
After Johnson fired Stanton, he was impeached by the House and tried by the Senate, his impeachment failing by one vote. The Tenure of Office Act was decreed unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in Myers v. United States, 272 U.S. 52 (1926).
The point is that one of the specific intentions of the Tenure of Office Act was to give Congress specific grounds to impeach Johnson. So it's been done before.

(49 posts)What they really want is to limit immigration, and deny a good life to Latinos who need to come across our border for jobs. What are Republicans afraid of? That Americans can't compete with undocumented workers in the workplace? Of course they can. And if undocumented workers get US jobs, then that's just how our system works. Let the best man (or woman) win!
