Russia vetoes U.N. resolution against Crimea referendum

Source: Reuters

(Reuters) - Russia on Saturday vetoed a U.N. Security Council draft resolution that declares a planned referendum on the status of Ukraine's Crimea region "can have no validity" and urges nations and international organizations not to recognize it.

The Russian veto of the draft resolution, drawn up by the United States, was expected. Moscow, which has sent military forces to the Crimea, is backing Sunday's referendum, which would transfer control of the region from Ukraine to Russia.

The brief resolution noted that the referendum was not backed by the Ukrainian government in Kiev.

"This referendum can have no validity, and cannot form the basis for any alteration of the status of Crimea," it states. It calls on "all states, international organizations and specialized agencies not to recognize any alteration of the status of Crimea on the basis of this referendum."

I misread that. Thanks for the correction.

Well Kiev wouldn't really would it. Kiev is acutely aware that Crimea is its richest, or one of its richest , regions but disregards the fact it would cease to be so if made subject to an EU trade agreement - almost all of its industrial output goes to Russia, Belarous and Kazakhstan and could not be alternatively exported to the EU at economic prices.

at Guantanamo (and bases in a hundred other countries) and head home, since signed agreements between Ukraine and Russia over the military occupation of Crimea are not recognized in the vetoed UN resolution.

“It should be “perezagruzka” (the Russian word for reset)," said Lavrov."This says ‘peregruzka,’ which means ‘overcharged.’”

A quick comeback – and recovery – from Clinton: "We won't let you do that to us, I promise. We mean it and we look forward to it."

..............."ratcheted up tensions not only in Crimea but also eastern Ukraine, where two people were killed in clashes late on Friday."

They forgot to mention that those two people who were killed, were killed by armed members of the Right Sector.

Isn't it amazing how you can "omit information" to convey the message you want the reader to take away.

with most Americans' it makes no difference who is attacking who. We are just tired of getting involved in foreign fights. Anything short of the holocaust killings and majority of Americans will say no to it.

according to Amnesty International:
Video footage taken in Donetsk on Thursday night shows how a police cordon initially separated the opposing groups until a group of men armed with sticks, metal tubes and knives were allowed to break the cordon and attack the pro-Ukrainian protesters.

Amnesty International’s contact reported that police told those being attacked to board a police bus, which essentially made them easy targets, as the bus had no driver and was blocked by two cars.

and in other eyewitness reports:
KIEV, Ukraine — At least two pro-Ukraine protesters participating in an anti-war demonstration were killed and more than a dozen others injured late on Thursday after their group was violently attacked by men from an opposing pro-Russia demonstration in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk.

The pro-Ukraine participants had been waving blue and yellow Ukrainian flags as part of a "For a United Ukraine" rally on Donetsk's Lenin Square when pro-Russian activists began heaving firecrackers, eggs and stun grenades at them, chanting, “Russ-i-a!” and “On your knees!”, according to eyewitnesses and journalists from local news site Novosti Donbassa who spoke with Mashable.

Police tried but failed to whisk away the pro-Ukraine demonstrators from the scene in a police bus, but the pro-Russia activists smashed out its windows and clobbered it with a barrage of firecrackers.

The two people killed were killed (shot) in Kharkov.

You should really check your info before you post......or you'll end up looking rather silly and ignorant.
