ORLANDO, Fla. A Florida prosecutor is preparing to announce the results of his investigation into an FBI agent's fatal shooting of a Chechen man as he was being questioned about a Boston Marathon bombing suspect.
State attorney Jeff Ashton said in a statement Thursday that he plans to release his report on Tuesday morning.
Ibragim Todashev (IH'-bruh-heem TOH'-duh-shehv) was killed in Orlando in May while FBI agents and others questioned him about his friendship with suspected Boston Marathon bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev (TAM'-ehr-luhn tsahr-NEYE'-ehv). Officials originally said the 27-year-old lunged at an agent with a knife. They later said it was no longer clear what happened.
Ashton met with Todashev's family in August shortly after that he said he would review the circumstances that led to the shooting.

FBI is criminal from the top down.
Can't wait to see this white wash.

(54 posts)"This American Life" just did an entire episode about this case and some of the "irregularities" associated with it. Interesting stuff. The FBI came off looking VERY suspicious.

(10,007 posts)They'll find that the FBI agents were completely justified in their use of excessive force, move along, nothing to see here.

(135,425 posts)Both the FBI and the Massachusetts State Police (who were there with the FBI in that FL condo) NEED to start RECORDING their damn interviews. They don't need to be sitting there with a frigging pencil and notepad, looking away from their subjects to jot down this or that.
We actually HAVE the technology, it's even possible to WEAR it.
There is no excuse for police interviews that are not recorded. It should be mandated at all levels of government, it should be the paradigm. All officers of the law should WEAR recording devices on duty--no exceptions.
IMO, anyway.

(11,841 posts)And I agree with you; every interaction with a cop should be filmed. that way if YOU are an ass it shows it. If, more likely, the cop is an ass, it will show that too.

(135,425 posts)This has bothered me ever since the story broke.
In an investigation like this, to kill a person with potential information? Sure, it's a violation of his constitutional rights, but even assuming that they just didn't care about those (safe assumption, IMO), why would you do this?
I can't believe the story given, I can't believe that all those people present couldn't control the man even if he attacked without having to shoot him, and I won't believe a word of the state attorney's report. Not that I think the state attorney would get any honest information from the FBI in the first place.
It stinks. It reeks.

(135,425 posts)Then to my horror I learned that MA State Police almost NEVER use cameras, even in vehicles; and that, to me, is suspicious. They're past due to join the 20th, never mind the 21st century.
Generally speaking, though, if -- and that is a big IF -- the guy tried to put the life of one of those interviewers in danger, it's not incumbent upon them to spare his life or take a less dire approach to subduing him. I know it seems "off" but that is the way they run things pretty much in all law enforcement. If someone endangers their life, they just "shoot to kill." They don't even try to "wing 'em" or do any of the things we learned about in cowboy films. When someone is shot and not killed by police, it's generally due to a bad aim, not a desire to spare the life of the target. They are also supposed to stop shooting once the danger has passed, of course.
Perhaps that will be the Next Big Thing--a way to encapsulate/envelope a person in some nice fluffy batting when they try to make a move, to prevent them from moving/wounding/killing someone without having to kill the suspect/perpetrator.

(8,303 posts)Esp. in an investigation like this.
If you can't tell the difference between an execution and a defense against violence, then they should just tape all the interviews and be done with it.
I just feel strongly that this was a wrongful death.

According to "Channel 9 Investigates," 11/14/13:
He is the man whose team decides which cases go to trial and which do not.
His office decided not to file charges on about 60 percent of the 10,000 felony cases received.
"We were filing cases that were garbage, that we shouldn't be filing," Ashton said.
At that rate, he's set to surpass the previous administration by 3,000 cases -- cases that include allegations of, robbery, rape and murder.
He's not apologizing for it.
"No. Not every victim deserves their day in court. Some of them don't," Ashton said ...

It pays to be a P.I.G., even if it's with the F.B.I.

FBI agent cleared in fatal shooting of Ibragim TodashevA Florida prosecutor has cleared an FBI agent in the May shooting death of a Chechen immigrant linked to one of the men accused of carrying out the Boston Marathon bombing, US media report.
State Attorney Jeff Ashton will not charge the agent in the death of Ibragim Todashev.
The FBI has said Todashev, 27, attacked the agent with a metal pole during an interview in his Orlando apartment.
Todashev had been a friend of Tamerlan Tsarnaev, one of the suspected bombers.

The agent was also cleared of wrong-doing in an internal FBI inquiry, the New York Times reports.

Thanks to soundsgreat for catching this.
I'm sure Rachel will cover this -- she's noted before that the FBI is something like 160-0 in exonerations.
