108 listed missing in mudslide, report says

Source: Associated Press

ARLINGTON, Wash. (AP) — There are 108 names on the list of people who've been reported missing or unaccounted for in the weekend mudslide in Washington state, authorities said Monday.

Snohomish County emergency management director John Pennington said that's the consolidated list from various sources that authorities are working from, and it doesn't mean there are that many injuries or fatalities.

"It's a soft 108," Pennington said at a news conference

Among the missing are construction workers coming into the neighborhood and people just driving by. Pennington added the slide occurred on a Saturday morning, when more people were likely to be home.

This is way bigger than the local news has been reporting.

Last I saw was 3 dead, one injured. Nothing about more than a hundred missing.

The final total will not be 108 dead in a 1 square mile slide. Oso, WA is not that dense.

..... and I don't see how anybody from the side of the mountain that slipped, to
across the highway, and down the river could have lived. From over 50 feet in
height down to a few feet tall the slide looks like it had massive pressure and
weight.

A ton of soil is 4'x4'x2' (rough)

Look for Rowan, WA on an aerial map - about a mile east of Oso.

The top of the slide face is outlined across the river from Steelhead Dr. - it slipped about 6, 7 years ago and filled the river channel.

Steelhead Drive up to C-Post Rd. is where the slide occurred. Many more structures than I had thought - must be some newer retirement homes.

My son was caught in a mudslide once, just a small one. He was driving a car full of teenagers, 5 or 6 I think, doing about 20 mph, and the mud just came along, carried them down a hill and rolled them over. Nobody was hurt, thank goodness, but everyone was terrified and the car was totaled. Scary.

In a story I read this morning, there was a comment that yesterday rescuers flying in a helicopter could hear calls for help, but could not land there.

I hope that they found them.

Someone mentioned the term liquefaction..

Officials at the massive mudslide on SR 530 said this morning they have reports of 108 missing and unaccounted-for individuals as a result of the disaster.

John Pennington, who heads the county’s Department of Emergency Management, quickly added that the reports are vague and insists the number of victims will not be nearly that large. He called 108 a “soft number.”

Today’s operation at the site will include the use of aircraft, search dogs and technical teams to “probe the ground.” The search has been difficult due to the consistency of the mud, which has caused rescuers to sink. Rescuers are digging through muddy debris that is 20 feet or more deep in some areas.

Going into detail about the slide site, Pennington said there are 59 vacant lots in the slide area, and another 49 lots had some sort of structure — meaning a house, a cabin or some type of possible dwelling. Of all of the structures, 25 were likely occupied full-time. Pennington said that because the slide happened on a Saturday, more people likely were at home, not at work.....

Search and rescue crews have located an additional six bodies, bringing the total number of those killed in the massive landslide near Oso to 14.
In addition, during a Monday evening news conference officials said they have received 176 reports of missing people after Saturday's deadly slide, which is an increase from 108 said earlier in the day.
During an earlier news conference, Snohomish County Emergency Management Director John Pennington said there were 108 report doesn't mean there are 108 injuries or fatalities, but it's the consolidated list of those reported missing from various sources that authorities are working from.
"In some cases that list is very detailed -- John with brown hair blue eyes and lived in a particular neighborhood -- in a lot of cases it's a name like Frank -- I met him once I think he lived over there," said Pennington....

Friends and family who got out are saying who was with them that didn't. And some are known for sure. More are people who may be, can't be gotten hold of yet, etc.

The situation sucks.
