Lufthansa to cancel 3,800 flights over pilots' strike

Source: BBC News

The airline said 425,000 passengers would be affected by the stoppages, due to take place on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Lufthansa added it would inform passengers via text message or email about the flight changes.

Its freight carrier, Lufthansa Cargo, will also be affected.

Lufthansa said the impact on profits would be "in the range of tens of millions of euros".

"The announcement alone has already caused significant damages since passengers have already rebooked flights and logistic customers have made arrangements with other cargo airlines to secure the transport of their goods," it said in a statement.

"During the three-day walkout by Cockpit teams, there will only be around 500 short- and long-haul flights by Lufthansa and Germanwings," Lufthansa said.

How silly. A good capitalist profit-seeking airline would just use "charter pilots". Scuba Mar 2014 #3

Except that due to customer service that bordered on "get lost!" I switched to a combination of Air Berlin and Air France years ago. I'm told they have improved in the meantime, but they lost me as a "Senator (or whatever they call their so-called elite customers these days)" many years ago. The fact that their US partner is United should be damning enough.

All airlines experience technical details or weather-related delays. However the government-bureaucrat attitude of LH (at least when I took them) disgusted me. One time when their flight from Düsseldorf to Frankfurt (a 35 minute flight) was over an hour late, and I missed their flight to Dallas, they sent me from one counter to another because no one wanted to take the time to reroute me. I ended up taking American instead. Another time, I was invited to leave the LH VIP lounge because they noticed that my flight that day wasn't on LH and they thought I looked too "ordinary" to be a LH VIP or something. I wrote them an angry letter telling them I would never darken the door of their VIP lounge again, as I seldom traveled in full royal regalia. They were very apologetic, said their employee was wrong to boot me out, they valued their Senator card holders, etc. etc., but I never went in there again.

After that, I started taking Air France for all my overseas flights and my weekly runs down to Paris (this was before the days of the Thalys). What a difference! Miss a connection? Air France bent over backwards to get me on another flight. Long line at security meant I got to the gate too late for the last bus leaving out to the plane? The check in agent commandeered a car and drove me to the plane himself! I am now Air France Platinum for Life. Way back when, they had a lousy reputation, I hear, but someone must have told them the simple rules of passenger loyalty, and some bright CEO got the message.
