Clouds remain over Conyers' bid to qualify for Aug. 5 primary ballot

Source: Detroit Free Press

An initial review of petitions filed by U.S. Rep. John Conyers, D-Detroit, show that he has enough valid signatures to qualify for the Aug. 5 primary ballot. But the Wayne County Clerk’s Office said Wednesday that he’s not out of the woods yet.

Of the 2,000 signatures turned in by Conyers, 1,193 are from valid registered voters in the 13th congressional district — only 1,000 valid signatures are required. But there’s still a challenge from Conyers’ opponent, the Rev. Horace Sheffield, a Detroit Democrat, that has to be sorted out.

In the challenge, Sheffield claims that up to seven of the circulators may not be registered to vote, which is a requirement for people collecting signatures. The valid signatures include names collected by the circulators in question, said Delphine Oden, elections director for Wayne County.

The county clerk’s office has sent letters to clerks in Ecorse and Detroit to try and find out whether the circulators are registered voters. Depending on how many signatures those people collected — if they’re ruled invalid — Conyers could face a disqualification from the primary ballot.

I haven't been following this closely, but it sounds just as bad as Tea Party primary challenge by someone and then losing the GE.

In Front of 17,000 with Rep. John Conyers seated on stage, Farrakhan delivers hateful, bigoted speech.

In a fiery speech delivered to 18,000 at Joe Louis Arena, Minister Louis Farrakhan blasted the U.S. judicial system as being biased against African Americans, calling upon the community to set up its own courts.

With U.S. Rep. John Conyers, a Detroit Democrat, and Detroit City Council President BrendaJones sitting behind him, Farrakhan spoke for nearly three hours. He urged unity among Muslim and Christian leaders, saying that “Jesus and Mohammed would be arm in arm,” and he reiterated the Nation of Islam’s view that the U.S. is a land headed for destruction unless it starts to obey the word of God.

Farrakhan railed against Christian pastors who endorse gay marriage.

“God has never sanctioned that kind of behavior,” Farrakhan said.

On Thursday night, Farrakhan spokeswoman Ava Muhammad said that African Americans needed to separate because eventually, “planes are going to destroy every area that is not dominated by Islam.” She said Detroit might be the city Nation of Islam members choose to migrate to in order to form their own community.
