Gerry Adams freed in Jean McConville murder inquiry

Source: BBC Northern Ireland

Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams has been released from custody over a 1972 murder and a file will be sent to the Public Prosecution Service, police have confirmed.

Mr Adams had been questioned at Antrim PSNI Station since Wednesday, after he was arrested in connection with the murder of Jean McConville.

The 37-year-old widow and mother of 10 was abducted from her home in west Belfast, shot and secretly buried by the IRA.

Her body was found a beach in County Louth in 2003.

This is definitely new news, and not an update to last week's arrest story. Props to RB TexLa for posting this in GD.

Mr Adams has always denied involvement in the killing.

Police had until 20:00 BST on Sunday to charge or release Mr Adams.

Sinn Féin had condemned the arrest, claiming it was political and hinting that they may reconsider their support for the police.

However, unionists said no-one should be above the law and Democratic Unionist leader and Northern Ireland First Minister Peter Robinson accused Sinn Féin of trying to "blackmail" the police.

Adams boss back in the day Ivor Bell says that Adams was in charge of that mission. He would have been about 25/26 and just out of prison himself at the time so I find it hard to believe he was so high up in the ranks of the IRA to be in charge of missions and campaigns. Time will tell though. I do feel for the McConville family.

Still no reason to be executed and dragged out of her home late at night in front of her 10 children.
She was a Protestant and her husband was Catholic. They originally lived in Protestant Estate Housing (our version of the projects) but when the council found out her husband was Catholic they were evicted. That's why the family ended it up living in the The Falls Road.
