These 7 Republicans Will Serve On The Benghazi Select Committee

Source: TPM

SAHIL KAPUR – MAY 9, 2014, 12:30 PM EDT

House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) on Friday announced the Republican members who'll serve on the select committee to investigate the Benghazi attacks of 2012.

They are:

Rep. Susan Brooks (R-IN)
Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC), Chairman
Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH)
Rep. Mike Pompeo (R-KS)
Rep. Martha Roby (R-AL)
Rep. Peter Roskam (R-IL)
Rep. Lynn Westmoreland (R-GA)

"This investigation is about getting answers for the families of the victims and for the American people," Boehner said. "These members have each demonstrated a commitment to this goal, and I have confidence that they will lead a serious, fact-based inquiry."

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) declined to reveal Friday morning if Democrats will participate in the investigation.

Lynn Westmoreland, Republican U.S. Representative from Georgia's 8th (2005–07) and 3rd (2007–present) congressional districts and a member of the Tea Party Caucus.[32] In December 2011, Justin Sink of The Hill described Westmoreland as a "Tea Party favorite".

and mentioned that the Dems were scheduled to have a 9:00 am meeting with Pelosi to decide next steps. He felt that someone should be there and a caller mentioned that Delauro suggested to have just one there as the rep to torpedo the fiasco and put the truth out there.

Jordon was one of the powers behind the government shutdown.

The lead dog Gowdy is the one who introduced the enforce the law act this session. It in essence was designed to make it easier to sue Obama.

Pompeo is all about ending the EPA. It's an obsession of his.

Roby I recall was one of the ones behind cutting funding for SNAP. She's an excellent GOP tool on pretty much everything, a real tow the line kind of Republican.

Roskam is one of the asses who wanted to escalate in Iraq and keep boots on the ground basically forever.

Westmoreland is the major asshole who called the Obama's "uppity."

That's all I know about this bunch.

I forbade them to treat this like serious and straightforward congressional business. They have to do SOME THING to illustrate the charade character of these proceedings.

and ask them to expand the scope of the investigation so as to figure out why hundreds of embassy staff and employees have been murdered in the previous 20 years. Also ask them to look into why embassy security funding wasn't sufficient to possibly prevent this.

... At a news conference denouncing the committee’s formation on Friday, however, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) told reporters that family members of two of the four Americans who died the night of the attack had reached out to oppose the formation of the committee. “(They) have called us and said: Please don’t take us down this path again,” the former Speaker said. She did not offer further details on which of the families had contacted Congress.

One of those, ThinkProgress has learned, is the family of former Navy SEAL Tyrone Woods. “A family member from the maternal side of Tyrone Woods’ family called Rep. Slaughter yesterday while she was on the floor to express support for the Congresswoman’s position,” a member of Rep. Louise Slaughter’s office confirmed to ThinkProgress. Slaughter’s office declined to offer more details out of respect for the family. Woods was present the night of the attack in the Central Intelligence Agency’s annex in Benghazi and was one of the security forces that responded to the original attack against the diplomatic outpost. Woods, along with fellow CIA security contractor Glen Doherty, died under mortar fire the night of the attack ...

Supposedly there were nearly 200 of them clamoring to be a member of the committee. Yet, oddly, all members of the committee come from
wildly safe conservative districts. They received no less than 58% of the vote and in 3 cases more than 60% of the vote.

I think any Republican member who is in a moderate district wanted no part of being on the committee. Republicans nationally in 2012 received 47.6%
of the vote (less than Democrats) yet in these districts the Republicans did quite well.

Rep. Susan Brooks (R-IN) (Won 58% of the vote in 2012)

Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC), Chairman (Won 65% of the vote in 2012)

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) (Won 59% of the vote in 2012)

Rep. Mike Pompeo (R-KS) (Won 62% of the vote in 2012)

Rep. Martha Roby (R-AL) (Won 64% of the vote in 2012)

Rep. Peter Roskam (R-IL) (Won 59% of the vote in 2012)

Rep. Lynn Westmoreland (R-GA) (uncontested in 2012)
