Israeli official blasts Indyk's remarks on breakdown of peace process

Source: Jerusalem Post

Israel fired back on Friday at the US envoy to the Middle East peace process, who blamed Jewish settlement construction in part for the breakdown of peacemaking with the Palestinians, saying he himself had done nothing to help the negotiations.

The blunt riposte signaled continued, deep tensions between Israel and Washington over the US-led talks, which collapsed last month amid bitter recriminations.

In his first public comments on the negotiations, US envoy Martin Indyk said on Thursday that neither side had had the stomach to make the necessary compromises, and singled out settlement building on occupied territory as a particular obstacle.

But a senior Israeli official familiar with the talks accused Indyk of hypocrisy, saying he had known construction in the West Bank and east Jerusalem would continue during the discussions.

Prior to his appointment as US envoy to the Middle East peace proces, Indyk was a former Research Director at the American Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), Indyk was the founding director of the Washington Institution for Near East Policy (WINEP), an AIPAC-created think tank dedicated to influencing the executive branch on Middle East foreign policy while AIPAC focused on lobbying members of Congress. Indyk is also the founding director of Brookings’ Saban Center for Middle East Policy.

For the better, in my opinion.

It must be difficult for Bibi to accept he was diplomatically outflanked by Iran, of all nations.

4. I'm not sure how Iran is in this

Beyond Netanyahu's apparent belief that Iran is responsible for every problem in his life.

"I can't get a parking space... IRAAAAAAAAAAAN!"
"There's only one square of tisue left o nthe roll... IRAAAAAAAAAAN!"
"They canceled Firefly! IRAAAAAAAAN!"

Other than the paranoid ravings caused by Netanyahu's brief role hammering nails into his sinus as a circus geek, I'm not sure how Iran features in Israel deciding to scuttle talks with the Palestinians.

Unless by "outflanked" you mean that Iran's doing a better job of good relations with the US than Israel is.
