The renowned Swiss artist H.R. Giger has died at the age of 73, following injuries sustained in a fall, Swiss public television, SRF, has reported. Giger was most famous for the alien monster he created for the movie of the same name.
SRF cited family sources. In the art world, Giger, who focused during his career on the fantastic realism and surrealistic genres, is best known for his contribution to the film Alien. The monster he created for Ridley Scott’s film earned him an Oscar for special effects in 1980.

His talent for scaring movie audiences was repeated in Poltergeist 2 (1986), Alien 3 (1992) and Species (1995). Computer game fans were able to enjoy his work in Dark Seed in 1995.

His film work was just one facet of his talent, though. Giger is also known for his sculptures, paintings and furniture.

The DKs (a San Francisco punk band) released the Frankenchrist album. It was a good album, but the band had inserted a print of Giger's "Landscape #XX" aka "Penis Landscape," which is pretty much what it sounds like. The resulting obscenity trial almost bankrupted their record label.

Or is it sick societies that are increasingly so?

I visited, it would have been summer 2001, the H.R. Giger Museum, inaugurated summer 1998 in the Château St. Germain, a four-level building complex in the historic, medieval walled city of Gruyères, CH. Highly recommended.

I was on a bus tour of Switzerland and I didn't even know the museum was in Gruyeres. We only had an hour to tour, but I could have spent all day there. Amazing!

It depicts rows of penises (one wearing a condom) entering vaginas. I don't think penises are obscene, but many people would consider the painting to be porn.

Interesting that one of the band's most vocal supporters was Frank Zappa.

Should do a tribute cartoon showing the Alien creature shedding a tear
with Giger's name and birth and death years shown, with "farewell".

On another Giger thread, I found this quote and I have to say I agree with him

"My paintings seem to make the strongest impression on people who are, well, who are crazy," Giger said in a 1979 interview with Starlog magazine. "If they like my work they are creative ... or they are crazy."
