UPDATE 1-Russia targets space projects in response to U.S. high-tech sanctions

Source: Reuters

MOSCOW May 13 (Reuters) - Russia will bar the United States from using Russian-made rocket engines for military satellite launches, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said on Tuesday, retaliating for sanctions on high-tech equipment which Washington has imposed over the Ukraine crisis.

He also said Russia would reject a U.S. request to prolong the use of the International Space Station beyond 2020.

Russia pledged to respond in kind when the United States said last month that it would deny export licences for any high-technology items that could aid Russian military capabilities and would revoke existing licences.

Moscow's measures would affect MK-33 and RD-180 engines which Russia supplies to the United States, Rogozin told a news conference. "We are ready to deliver these engines but on one condition that they will not be used to launch military satellites," he said.

4. It's not all of our rockets that use those engines...

I believe it's just the Atlas rockets that use the Russians engines for the lower stages. The Delta IV is uses US rocket engines, and of course there is the Falcon 9 from SpaceX. I'd be curious to see what someone who has some first hand experience/knowledge with this topic has to say about this entire situation, and if it's an issue that will affect much.

6. This was a foregone conclusion, and a good thing in the long run.

Once a war of sanctions started, it was obvious that Russia would retaliate by cutting off space program access with the U.S. and gas supply to Ukraine. These are the easy responses that best make Russia's point. However, I can't be upset about this. The U.S. has been disgracefully falling down on its manned space program, and this is an important wakeup call that congress needs to get on the stick and start funding NASA appropriately.

or at the very least he doesn't mind hurting Russia's place in the international community in personal pursuit of power.

We could stop buying over-the-top aircraft carriers and way-too-many fighter planes and get back to building spacecraft and putting more people to work while allowing some of us to dream about the future again. IMHO.

I was so happy to land a job in the field I paid for training in.
Was there a year and a half, and the Chinese came in for tours.
Our work was classified.
They outsourced our contracts to China.
This is Russia, but it still is the same thing coming back to bite them in the ass.
