Harry Reid: ‘I can’t vote for’ Georgia judicial pick Michael Boggs
Source: AJC.com
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, the man who has the most control over what moves and what does not in the U.S. Senate, said he cannot support controversial Georgia judicial nominee Michael Boggs.
The day after Boggs contentious hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Reid tells Buzzfeed that at this point he is against Boggs nomination:
Ive not talked to (Judiciary Chairman) Pat Leahy personally. I will do that, Reid said in an interview with BuzzFeed. Unless I have a better explanation. I cant vote for him. This is a lifetime appointment. Hes said some things and made some decisions I think are not very good.

14. As I understand it, the GOP got Boggs as part of a "blue slip" deal.
It was part of a deal that allowed Obama to appoint a bunch of Dems that otherwise would not have been appointed had the GOP fully exercised their right to veto home state nominees. Yes, we let the GOP have this one major douchebag, but it was in exchange for them not blue slipping a bunch of Dem judges.
Tough call.

It's not "pure and simple".. because you're ignoring all the progress that has been made during the Obama Admin.

He tried to appoint Larry Summers chair of the Fed, remember? What were we going to get for that? And his Dog Food Commission, what were their recommendations again?
And what did the 99% get for extending Bush's tax cuts for the rich? Or keeping Bush conservative lawyers at the DOJ. Or appointing so many corporate and Wall Street conservatives to his administration.....

(3,596 posts)Apparently Obama agreed with the two Georgia Nazi Senators to put this guy forward in order to allow other nominees to get an up or down vote.
As a progressive living in hell in Georgia (but I see light at the end of the tunnel) I support Reid and hopefully other Democrats who will reject this Obama nominee.
The person didn't have a problem with the Confederate Flag. He supported one-man/one-woman marriage. He supported a bill that would have required a public posting of all physicians and clinics that provided abortion services. In testimony he said he didn't realize that would place those individuals' and other lives' in danger.
Frigging idiot. He lives in Georgia the home of Rudolph who bombed both gay clubs and abortion clinics. For him to now say he had no idea.
Reject, reject, reject.

(10,622 posts)Many people confuse the word Nazi (one group of fascists) when attempting to describe any fascist they encounter.
Since I believe "fascist" was meant, I do not believe it was over the top, the word has a real meaning and could certainly be said to apply to these men.

(5,768 posts)...Mussolini did not say this, although he did talk about "corporatism". However, the "corporatism" he was referring to is a moderate form of guild socialism or syndicalism. Mussolini was claiming that fascism was in actuality the realization of the goals and ideals of guild socialism / syndicalism.

According to publiceye.org:It is generally attributed to an article written by Mussolini in the 1932 Enciclopedia Italiana with the assistance of Giovanni Gentile, the editor.
The quote, however, does not appear in the Enciclopedia Italiana in the original Italian.
It does not appear in the official English translation of that article: Benito Mussolini, 1935, "The Doctrine of Fascism," Firenze: Vallecchi Editore.
And it does not appear in the longer treatment of the subject by Mussolini in: Benito Mussolini, 1935, "Fascism: Doctrine and Institutions," Rome: 'Ardita' Publishers.
Where the quote comes from remains a mystery, and while it is possible Mussolini said it someplace at some time, a number of researchers have been unable to find it after months of research.

(5,768 posts)... is explicitly opposed to liberal democracy and openly supportive of authoritarian collectivism. I'm not sure which senators are being identified as "Nazi" or "fascist", but I doubt that any senator could accurately be characterized as fascist in consideration of its real meaning. In my opinion, both characterizations are "over the top".

(10,622 posts)Fourteen Defining
Characteristics Of Fascism
By Dr. Lawrence Britt
Source Free Inquiry.co
5-28-3
Dr. Lawrence Britt has examined the fascist regimes of Hitler (Germany), Mussolini (Italy), Franco (Spain), Suharto (Indonesia) and several Latin American regimes. Britt found 14 defining characteristics common to each:
1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism - Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.
2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights - Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.
3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause - The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.
4. Supremacy of the Military - Even when there are widespread
domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.
5. Rampant Sexism - The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Divorce, abortion and homosexuality are suppressed and the state is represented as the ultimate guardian of the family institution.
6. Controlled Mass Media - Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.
7. Obsession with National Security - Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.
8. Religion and Government are Intertwined - Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions.
9. Corporate Power is Protected - The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.
10. Labor Power is Suppressed - Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed.
11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts - Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts and letters is openly attacked.
12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment - Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.
13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption - Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.
14. Fraudulent Elections - Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

"...hes OK with Republican billionaire and politically active free-spending Las Vegas casino owner Sheldon Adelson."
"So, Sheldon Adelson, dont pick on him. Hes not in it to make money.
"Adelson spent about $150 million in support of Republican candidates and causes during the 2012 elections. At present he is financing an extensive lobbying campaign in Washington and in various states seeking a ban on gambling over the Internet."
Sure, our good buddy republican billionare Sheldon is spending money, but not to make money. He must be spending all that money because of a deep-seated moral aversion to internet gambling...or any other gambling that doesn't enrich casinos.
