BAGUIO CITY, May 16(PIA) -- Indigenous people of Benguet and the local government units are encouraged to be more vigilant in protecting the mountains to prevent forest fires that affect the centuries- old mummies in their resting places.

Engr. Orlando Abinion of the National Museum said that the people of Benguet should do everything to protect their mountains and prevent the effect of the climate change to the mummies in the caves in Kabayan particularly the Timbac Caves.

Abinion, a speaker in the recently concluded 5th Tam-awan International Arts Festival with the theme “Cordillera Stories… Rituals and Beliefs,” said that the climate change is now affecting the different cultural heritage and archaeological sites in the country and the mostly being affected are s the mummies since these are organic and until today their formulation is still a mystery.

He explained that due to the extreme heat, strong rains and sometimes hailstorms, the rocks of the caves have had hairline cracks where rain water sips in.
