Village Council in India Orders Rape
Source: The Daily Beast
According to her family and police, a 14-year-old girl was taken into the forest and raped on orders of her village council. The order came as punishment for her brother's sexual assault. "We kept begging them. We begged with folded hands but they would not listen. They dragged her away to the forest," the victim's mother said. The police say they have arrested two men, the village headman and the husband of the woman who says she was molested by the victim's brother. The brother has also been arrested. The rape took place after midnight on Sunday in the state of Jharkand.

(95,337 posts)This is what happens after decades of gendercide where families kill and/or abort females in favor of men.

Sometimes I feel as if I am a member of a separate species. I see stuff like this, and the behavior of wackjob right in our own culture, and I trust that my children will never ever mix their DNA with those people. And I mean "those people" in the bigoted sense in that I think religious conservatives are inferior intellectually, genetically, emotionally, and physically.

WTF is wrong with some people?

(111,141 posts)The brother damaged some other family's property so the village damaged his family's property. Yes, the whole thing is stupidly cruel but it makes sense when women are only cattle and their only worthy possession is an intact hymen.
Rape laws here in the 1950s were property damage laws. Any woman who wanted to prosecute rape pretty much had to be a 90 year old virgin nun. Even with our more enlightened laws, women I know who prosecuted their rapists said the defense attorney raped them all over again. None would prosecute a second time.

(17,573 posts)And THAT is why the Hobby Lobby decision and every assault on women's rights matters so much.
The really crazy thing, to me? Is that basically it is a 50-50 chance whether any baby is born male or female. Luck of the draw. You win the 50-50, you are born male. You lose, you get to be female, and treated as property to at least a small extent in almost every country on this planet.
And yes, there are some ways males are treated badly in some societies. And of course it is also "luck of the draw" whether you are born in a wealthy country like the U.S. or a ravaged country like Somalia, or an enlightened (but cold!) country like Finland.
But seriously, having to deal with this kind of treatment just because a chromosome zigged when it should've zagged? And what would happen to the species if suddenly all chromosomes, realizing the consequences, started zagging at the right time?

(10,597 posts)... this needs to be seen by all. And India calls itself "the largest Democracy in the world!"
India cannot call itself civilized as long as they allow their women to be treated this way.

(11,014 posts)This is a disgusting yet isolated incident considering that India has 740 million women most of whom live an empowered and peaceful life.
India has proven its democratic traditions over 67 years with several elections in which power changed hands peacefully.
If the US has difficulty controlling and apprehending people like Bundy Ranch, can you imagine how difficult it must be to maintain law and order everywhere in a country of over 1.4 billion people, poor infrastructure and deeply embedded archaic traditions in deep rural areas.
Note that the culprits were arrested and will be tried. How long did it take to happen in Steubenville. How long did it take in Penn State?
People living in glass houses should not throw stones!
You're right. But it's not an "isolated" incident.
