Breaking Japan earthquake of 6.8 magnitude triggers tsunami advisory

Source: CBC News

A 6.8-magnitude earthquake has hit Japan's northern coast near the nuclear power plant crippled in the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

Japan's Meteorological Agency says the quake struck early Saturday 10 kilometres below the sea surface off the coast of Fukushima, northeast of Tokyo.

The agency issued tsunami advisory along the Japanese northern coast.

Public broadcaster NHK says the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant is checking if there is any damage from the quake

Its proximity to Fukishima is horrible. Is shallow good or bad? snagglepuss Jul 2014 #2
I think shallow is bad, because the shaking is closer to the surface. nt pnwmom Jul 2014 #6

That is a pretty shallow earthquake. The proximity to Fukushima is troubling.

But, I love their attitude. My DIL is from Okinawa and was FBing a friend there, asking how she was. Her friend said, "No power! Windy! Really bad! Can't watch football!!!" (I'm assuming she meant soccer)

I was frantic when the Fukishima disaster hit, I told her she needed to call her mother (mom lives outside of Tokyo). She called me back to let me know her mom and brothers were fine. When I asked if she said anything, she said, "Yes. She said I woke her up!"

She's at work, so I just sent her a text about the earthquake. I'm sure I'll get one back sayin, "Huh? Okay. Happy Friday!"

That's not a "run for the hills!" level... it's "watch out for a rip tide".

A vertical 6.9 quake could cause a much bigger one of several feet,
which could still be potentially dangerous to people right at the shore.

Possibly because it just happened and they have no real info, yet. Not that that has stopped them before.

A 20-centimeter (8-inche) tsunami reached the coast of Ishinomaki Ayukawa about 50 minutes after the quake. Smaller waves were observed at two other locations along the coast.

Changes to the shoreline, however, were not visible on television footages of NHK public broadcaster.
