Crews gain little ground against Shasta County's Bully Fire

Source: San Francisco Chronicle

(07-13) 19:35 PDT SHASTA COUNTY -- Firefighters were making little headway against a 3,700-acre blaze Sunday in rural Shasta County that investigators believe was sparked by the exhaust from a truck driven by a man delivering supplies to an illegal marijuana growing site.

The wildfire, called the Bully Fire after nearby Old Bully Choop Road, had destroyed six structures and was just 10 percent contained by late afternoon, said Dennis Mathisen, spokesman for the California Department of Fire and Forestry Protection. The blaze ignited around 3:30 p.m. Friday.

"It's just a very unforgiving land. We are close to 1,100 firefighters on the fire right now, and we're fighting it both from the ground and in the air," Mathisen said from near the fire front. "And it's hot - it's very, very hot."

Temperatures in Redding on Sunday exceeded 100 degrees.

Cal Fire law enforcement officials on Saturday arrested the driver of the rented truck, Freddie Alexander Smoke III, 37, of Sacramento. The coincidentally named Smoke is accused of recklessly causing a fire and cultivating unauthorized marijuana, both felonies, according to a Cal Fire press release.

paved road going in.

What a shame--and the driver's name is like something out of a bad graphic novel...."coincidentally named," indeed!

That, or his parents were big fans of the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers comics. Freddy is one of the three brothers, who were marijuana growers and users, along with other drugs...

If his parents were old hippies, he'd have to rebel by interning at the Nixon Library, or something!!!

Don't kids always hate what their parents like? It's almost a rule in Made For TV Movies!
