Hamas tells Egypt it rejects Gaza ceasefire

Source: Guardian

Hamas as officially told Egypt that it rejects an Egyptian-proposed Gaza ceasefire, a spokesman for the Islamist group has said. "The outcome of discussions within the internal institutions of the movement was to reject the proposal and therefore, Hamas informed Egypt last night it apologises for not accepting it," spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said on Wednesday.

Hamas's armed wing had already spurned the Egyptian plan on Tuesday, and Israel, which briefly halted its Gaza offensive, resumed attacks after cross-border rocket fire from the Palestinian territory persisted. Egypt claims it has not been involved in any negotiations since its proposed ceasefire in Gaza – which was accepted by Israel but rejected by Hamas – failed to gain traction on Tuesday.

The Egyptian Administration may be wary of being perceived within Egypt to be negotiating too closely with Hamas. The government has led a year-long vilification of the Islamist group, due to Hamas's links with Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood, which was forced from office last July. Brotherhood officials have been accused of spying for Hamas, while Hamas itself was banned in Egypt, and constantly attacked in pro-regime Egyptian media for allegedly meddling in Egyptian affairs.

Op-Ed: Gaza strip wants referendum on joining Russia

By Ken Hanly - Mar 19, 2014

In what is probably a satire the Russian-language version of the Palestinian Information Center a Hamas website, reports that there is an initiative in the Gaza strip for the Gaza strip to hold a referendum on joining Russia...

The Gaza strip is a Palestinian enclave within Israel governed by Hamas. The group is listed by many as a terrorist organization and is not part of the peace negotiations with Israel. According to the report the initiative is being pushed by Russian nationals who live in Gaza said to number about 50,000 most being women who have married Palestinian men but still have Russian passports.

These figures suggest that the report is satire or else whoever made up the numbers inflated them far beyond reality. Russian media reported in December of 2012 that there were fewer than 400 Russian passport holders in the Gaza Strip. A member of the group is quoted as saying:

"Moscow has said it will defend Russians anywhere in the world. Meanwhile, we live in a place where Israel has threatened our lives and those of our children for years on end. But if the Gaza Strip joined Russia, we would also have a well-protected border, up-to-date weapons, perhaps, even nuclear weapons..."

The writer appears to be mocking your article but is not footnoted regarding the number of Russians in Gaza, but then your piece did not footnote that either.

You might want to google of the title of pieces to see if they're being disputed or come from sources that aren't thought reputable. Good luck with your quest.

2. Hamas was left out of the negotiations for this offer

This was worked out between Netanyahu and the Egyptian Junta.

Palestinian factions in the Gaza Strip were also surprised to learn of the Egyptian cease-fire proposal, especially Hamas, which still views itself as the sovereign in Gaza.

All the factions knew that talks about a cease-fire were taking place, but they had expected Egyptian intelligence to fully coordinate any serious proposal with them, as had been the case in the past. They did not expect to hear about it from the media – nor did they expect that Egypt would coordinate with Israel but not with them.

...
When a member of the Israeli team asked whether Hamas would agree to the terms of the initiative, the Egyptians tried to reassure him, saying that if Israel agreed, Hamas would have no choice but to do the same.

In reality, the opposite occurred. The Egyptians gave Hamas’ political leadership minimal information and didn’t communicate with members of its military wing at all. The internal disputes between these two wings further contributed to the confusion, and to Hamas’ feeling that Egypt was pulling a fast one.

3. Hamas replied to Egypt's initial request for a ceasefire with extortionate demands to Egypt.

I'm guessing the Egyptians just got feed up with Hamas' crap and decided to proceed accordingly.

There are Israeli radicals under arrest for the murder of that Palestinian boy.

Where are the arrests of the Hamas radicals that killed those 3 Israeli boys?

7. Sadly, many rejoiced when the bodies were found

Just as many in Gaza, I think, rejoiced during the 9/11 attacks.

There are people living with no hope in their lives, and their leaders have no interest in establishing some sort of normal life.

Promoting life of fighting, of martyrdom, is more important and meaningful then, say, worrying about a sewer system..
