Arizona teacher files $4M claim in prison rape

Source: AP

PHOENIX (AP) — An Arizona teacher who was left alone in a classroom and then raped by a convicted sex offender filed a $4 million claim on Thursday against the state Department of Corrections.

The claim comes nearly six months after the attack at the Eyman prison and a week after the state's worker safety agency launched a full review of the state prison system's worker safety practices.

The teacher was alone in a classroom with no guard nearby on Jan. 30 when a convicted rapist assaulted her. Details of the case were first reported by The Associated Press after an open records request.

The claim says the department "failed miserably" in its duty to keep the teacher and other employees safe.

Prison authorities, or at least the guards, are not completely pleased with visiting teachers; they tend to endow the inmates with some sense of their rights that leads to something other than docility or the teachers themselves will notice something wrong with the prison and dare to speak up about it. Allowing such a teacher to come to harm through inaction is a very effective way of dealing with that annoyance and giving a big hint to anybody else who might make waves.

2. It was absolutely ludicrous to allow this teacher into a room full of sex offenders, and no guards

to protect her. It should have been clear to anyone with a brain this wasn't going to end well.

no prison is that incompetent...If they were, then half the inmates would have escaped...

5. The bit about the radio being on the wrong channel pretty much trumps it.

That's a terrible story, the prison authorities are deeply at fault to the point of an almost malicious negligence.

The worst part is that the perp had to allow her to use the phone because the radio wasn't contacting anyone. So her life was at the hands of her assailant.

the job.
They let a female teacher into a room full of sex offender without any supervision. And don't seem to think they done anything wrong.

7. Just pay her. Don't fight it. And lock the rapist up without parole for the rest of his life.

And fire whoever is responsible.
