Federal immigration officials have granted the wish of a fallen San Diego soldier’s family to allow her mother to remain in the United States.

Maria Cordova, 47, was released before noon Wednesday from a federal immigration facility in downtown San Diego.

She was originally scheduled to be deported to Mexico Tuesday after serving most of a year’s sentence for a recent drug conviction. She had lived in the United States without proper immigration status for two decades after losing her green card in a 1992 drug conviction.

Her daughter, 25-year-old Capt. Jennifer Moreno, was killed in action in Afghanistan in October. She was an Army nurse serving with Army Rangers as part of a female liaison team on the battlefield.
