A doctor and two other people have been shot at a wellness center on the campus of Mercy-Fitzgerald Hospital, Delaware County authorities tell NBC10. Authorities are still classifying this as an active shooter situation.
The shooting took place on the third floor of the Sister Marie Lenahan Wellness Center located along the 1500 block of Lansdowne Avenue in Darby, Pa., officials say. That's located across from the hospital on its campus. The Delaware County Prosecutor's Office says a 911 call came in at 2:19 p.m. with the caller saying a doctor had been shot. Sources say the physician had been hit in the head by the gunfire.
One of the victims has been taken to the trauma center at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in nearby Philadelphia. It wasn't immediately clear where the other two victims were being treated.
A suspect was taken into custody, officials said. Police are still working to determine whether that person is the only one involved. It is also unclear whether the suspect was shot.

(10,136 posts)Handguns are notoriously poor man-stoppers. The vast majority of those who stop their attack after being shot do so because they don't want to be shot again.
Both the doctor (grazed in the head) and the patient/attacker continued the fight after being shot. This is not uncommon.

(23,284 posts)The guy could have tried to draw his weapon to 'save the day' and caused the shots to be fired. Witness says they opened the door, saw the gunman standing with gun drawn, and later heard shots. Why do I always envision gun crazies responding to these posts as having drool coming out of their mouth and their eyes rolling around in their heads and veins sticking out of their necks as they pace back and forth, barking.

You're really trying to place the blame for the death of the woman on the Dr?
That's some sick shit there.

Without that firearm, this guy (the patient) could have went out in the hallway and just walked down the offices until he ran out of ammunition, the chief said.

(160,515 posts)One dead in shooting at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital in the Philadelphia suburbs
By Abby Ohlheiser July 24 at 4:12 PM
A hospital in the Philadelphia suburbs was on lockdown Thursday after a multi-victim shooting.
In a statement to reporters, Delaware County District Attorney Jack Whelan said that one female hospital employee died in the shooting, which occurred in the psychiatric unit of a wellness center on the hospital campus. Another victim was a doctor at the hospital, he added. Whelan described the suspect as having psychiatric issues.
In a later update to reporters, Whelan said that officials believe the injured doctor may have shot the suspect multiple times after the suspect opened fire. The suspect was then reportedly subdued by other employees of the hospital. Investigators hadnt yet interviewed the doctor at the time of Whelans update.
In all, three people were shot at the outpatient facility on the Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital campus in Darby, Penn., including the suspect. Whelan did not immediately identify either of the victims, or the suspected shooter.
