Israel rejects Kerry Gaza ceasefire proposal: Israeli TV
Source: AFP
Gaza City (Palestinian Territories) (AFP) - Israel on Friday rejected a Gaza ceasefire proposal presented by US Secretary of State John Kerry, Israeli public television said.
"The security cabinet has unanimously rejected the ceasefire proposal of Kerry, as it stands," Channel 1 said, adding ministers would keep discussing it.
Kerry met UN chief Ban Ki-moon and Egypt's foreign minister on Friday as pressure mounted for a ceasefire to end an 18-day conflict that has killed more than 800 Palestinians and 37 people on the Israeli side, 34 of them soldiers.
Israeli media reported Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government demanded the army be allowed to continue destroying tunnels used by the Palestinian group Hamas to carry out attacks inside Israel.

(5,082 posts)During Vietnam where 2 million Vietnamese were killed compared to 59,000 Americans there were also the usual apologists logically explaining away all the baby killing. Some things never change. But killing babies is killing babies.

(6,891 posts)had Hamas launched into Israel through tunnels before the most recent fighting began?

(17,064 posts)None that I know of. And although the tunnels could be used for military purposes, and thus pose a potential threat to Israeli security, I suspect most of their previous use has been to elude the blockade/embargo.

(8,992 posts)of any consequence from the tunnels we would have been hearing about it ad infinitum. What I do remember hearing about is the smuggling of supplies and goods through the tunnels.

"adding that ministers would continue discussing it" Does that mean that they want to see what happens in a few days? Are they considering a counter-offer?

(3,596 posts)This is why I want no more U.S. aid to Israel or the Palestinians. Time to cut them all off and rely only on their own resources.
If they choose to kill one another off then perhaps that land becomes available for some new use. I am tired of us expending time, effort and energy on peoples who just want to kill one another. Let them get at it and be done with it.

(563 posts)And republicans and democrats alike look at me like I'm a nut when I bring it up. If they choose to keep on killing each other they can do it on their own dimes! We have enough problems here at home that the money could be used for. Enough is enough, and the best way to show we mean it is to cut off the hand that feeds it!

(3,596 posts)I am actually a very compassionate person who believes in solving problems, helping those in need, etc. but this has gone on long enough.
Either the two sides seriously want to resolve their differences and live peacefully side-by-side or they don't. If they do then once we have sufficient evidence of this intent we can support this process but this should be "their" process and not ours. We should stay away.
If they want to kill one another then let them do it. Let the blood flow until the sands turn red. But that is their choice, not ours. I would prefer to protect the innocents and give them a chance but if, on both sides, they support the perpetrators of hatred and killing, so be it. Let's just get it over now.
We can get rid of all those religious buildings in Jerusalem. We can get rid of the Dome of the Rock and the Wailing Wall, etc. We can bring in bulldozers to get rid of that old rubble and build a Levant Disney. That's the ticket......
Seriously though it is time for the U.S. and outside influences from being involved. This is a decision only the Israelis and the Palestinians can take on their own.
