GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) Israel's prime minister warned Monday that the country faced a prolonged campaign against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, as the military urged residents in parts of the embattled territory to evacuate ahead of what appeared to be a broadening of the three-week war.
"What is coming will be worse," the Israeli military said in phone messages targeting Gaza militants.
Israeli leaders have been mulling whether to expand the assault against Hamas in Gaza, or respond to international calls for a truce.
The international community so far has been unable to bring about a cease-fire that would end the fighting, which has already killed at least 1,050 Palestinians, 52 Israeli soldiers and three civilians on the Israeli side.

Palestinian relatives mourn for Baraa Mogdadm, 6, who was killed along with 9 other people, all but one of them children, in an explosion at a park at Shati refugee camp, in the northern Gaza Strip, Monday, July 28, 2014. Israeli and Palestinian authorities traded blame over the attack and fighting in the Gaza war raged on despite a major Muslim holiday. (AP Photo/Adel Hana)

(1,352 posts)...before they simply kill the entire population?
And Palestinian civilians should evacuate to where exactly? To paraphrase Jon Stewart -- are they just supposed to swim for it?

(57,936 posts)1) a negotiated peace that is enforced on each side. Think Korea
2) the attacking side, the side that has entered foreign soil packs up and goes home. Think of the Mongols who stopped fighting when they apparently realized that the terrain ahead of them would not provide enough food for their many, many horses.
3) one side vanquishes, conquers the other.
What does Israel have to lose by trying for the third? It feels its existence is threatened by the Palestinians. It has been unable to negotiate a peace that makes it feel secure.
I'm not saying Israel will choose this or that. I would prefer a negotiated peace.
But to be honest, I don't know that Israel thinks it has anything to gain through negotiation or anything to lose by simply destroying Gaza. It is a horrible thought, but strategically, what are Israel's options. If it just gave the Palestinians land without a change in the desire of Palestinians to return to Jerusalem and the land that Israel is situated on, what are its choices?
Just give up? I don't think Israel will choose that. That's my view of the strategy.
I still wish Kerry and Obama well in the negotiations.
Blessed are the peacemakers . . .. .

(168 posts)The courage and determination of the children of gaza is being weighed on the scales of destiny and not found wanting! This is a contest between the corrupt netanayhu(google netanayhu crook) and the children of gaza to see who is tougher. Who can take a licking and come back for more saying "is that all you got bibi?

Your expressed perspective -- it's all about who's tougher! and DESTINY! -- simply furthers the war mentality that underlies this kind of barbarism. It's not a CONTEST, it's GENOCIDE.

(3,596 posts)removal by political or "other" means. It might avoid a costly trial.
The Israeli government are complicit in crimes against humanity and should be taken out or brought to the Hague for trial including Bibi the coward.
Immediately take away our patriot missiles and other sophisticated American hardware. Terminate all financial aid to Israel including military and watch Israel finally realize they are a nobody country, a country nobody cares about. They are not special. They are just a bunch of squatters living on the land the UN gave them in 1948 as an apology for the Holocaust. Israel is nothing more than that.
Once they realize they are nobody they will come to the table and negotiate in good faith. Until that happens the U.S. will just be their bitch.

(10,834 posts)Even the US would have trouble with the Israeli Air Force, they have over 400 F-15's and F-16's with well trained crews.
While the the USAF has about 2,000 fighters in service, most are no where near Israel.
And US carriers usually have no more then 3 squadrons of F-18's on board, about 36 planes.
