Blow to House G.O.P. Leadership as Border Bill Falters

Source: New York Times

WASHINGTON — Facing a rebellion among their most conservative ranks, House Republicans were forced on Thursday to scuttle an emergency spending measure to address the surge of young Central American migrants at the southern border, in a major embarrassment to the new leadership team.

House Republicans, who have long called for strengthening security at the nation’s southern border, are now forced to head home for the five-week August recess with nothing to show for their efforts — something many Republicans fear will be an enormous political liability.

The blow to Speaker John A. Boehner and his new team — including Representatives Kevin McCarthy of California, the new majority leader, and Steve Scalise of Louisiana, the whip — ensures that no legislation to address what both Democrats and Republicans call an urgent humanitarian crisis will reach President Obama’s desk before the August break.

“This situation shows the intense concern within our conference — and among the American people — about the need to ensure the security of our borders and the president’s refusal to faithfully execute our laws,” House Republican leaders said in a statement. “There are numerous steps the president can and should be taking right now, without the need for congressional action, to secure our borders and ensure these children are returned swiftly and safely to their countries.”

He had plenty to begin with, but the usual Republican clusterfuck du jour won't hurt. He needs to keep hammering the point home daily until the midterms: only one party is doing the heavy lifting right now and working.

The House Republicans are like an Ouroboros. Such a dysfunctional and self-defeating bunch they are.

The Republicans were able to advance a lawsuit against the President because he used his executive power to address an issue that Congress refused to address.

And in pretty much the same breath are now complaining that “There are numerous steps the president can and should be taking right now, without the need for congressional action, to secure our borders and ensure these children are returned swiftly and safely to their countries.”

If the Republicans retain or extend their power in Congress, The Onion is going to be put out of business...

they grouse when he does things with their input. Why don't they just admit their chickenshits who just want to blame the President, and don't even come back after break. They might as well just stay on permanent recess for all the "nothing" they accomplish.

Disclaimer: "Long-time reader, first-time poster." Personally I have mixed feeling on this, but is it time we simply open the borders and allow anyone who wants a better life to immigrate to the US? I would imagine there are a 100 million-plus rural Chinese and Indians that would, if given the opportunity, would like a better life. Unfortunately they are separated from the U.S. by the Pacific Ocean.

Overblown hype. They aren't into solutions, they are into fear mongering. And obstructionism in Congress.

Vacation starts tomorrow!

Their areas are overrun currently by crime syndicates trying to literally force them into service doing everything from pushing drugs to being recruited as assassins and child soldiers.

I do not see seeking refuge the same way as immigration for the purpose of living the American dream.

I don't think anybody has been advocating fully open borders, remember the golden rule, Republicans are nearly always full of shit.

If you favor opening the borders for the purposes of simply seeking a better life, there is a process to do that already, perhaps it simply has to be readdressed to make it somewhat easier as I don't fear huge masses of people looking to get rich in a country currently in the process of a merry race to the bottom for it's working class for the sake of corporate profit.

and in a lot of ways, just not the ones most of them are complaining about, it is.

So if the House decides to go into recess w/o resolving this.

Then the next day, the President should use his Constitutional power to call Congress back into session until it is resolved.

Yesterday was "Sue the President for taking unilateral action" Day - and today is "We are such failures at our job the president it going to have to go it alone." Day.

Simply put - the modern Republican Party cannot be trusted to operate the levers of power in Washington DC. Remind everyone you know that voting republican is voting for the downfall of America.

that should he take them, we will sue him and then impeach him because he took those actions that we told him to take.

And the dutiful M$M furiously reports these statements as if they are valid and sane.

It's been quite apparent for years now.

Their overarching political goal is to not govern to prove government doesn't work. It's tautological.

Not to worry, we've got it covered down here in Texas. Rick Perry and Shawn Hannity with their machine guns and big bullets, not to mention the Texas National Guard plus the right wing Patriots will shoot their little asses when they put their feet on Texas ground.
