Records: Kissinger made plans to attack Cuba
| October 1, 2014 | Updated: October 1, 2014 2:18pm

NEW YORK (AP) Newly revealed government records show that Secretary of State Henry Kissinger drew up contingency plans nearly 40 years ago to attack Cuba over their deployment of troops to Angola.

The documents were declassified at the request of the National Security Archive, which published them online Wednesday. An account of the episode is being published in a new book, "Back Channel to Cuba," written by William M. LeoGrande, a professor at American University, and Peter Kornbluh, director of the Cuban Documentation Project at the National Security Archive.

Among other things, the documents detail a Feb. 25, 1976, Oval Office meeting where Kissinger told President Gerald R. Ford, "I think we are going to have to smash Castro. We probably can't do it until after the election."

2. Why do we have this obsession with Cuba?

I think we are going to have to smash Castro. We probably can't do it until after the election.

We've had a blockade now for some 50 years. I can buy clothes today made in Vietnam and Cambodia (remember those countries?) and yet, we still won't trade with Cuba.

I don't understand it...

3. Wayne S. Smith, who was the US head of the US Interests Section (quasi-embassy) in Havana,

said the response in US politicians to the word "Cuba" is similar to werewolves' response to a full moon.

Sounds about right, doesn't it?

8. Good observation...

I was hoping to visit Cuba some day, but it looks like that'll never happen...

5. Absolutely. The world would have been so much better off without him.

They must have given him the Nobel Peace Prize as a gag. They were probably doubled over as he pompously accepted it.

12. Secret Government is un-American.

This report shows why.

While it would make a good corporate headline: "Ford-Kissinger liberate Cuba" it would omit the "for the Mafia" part.

Thank you, Judi Lynn!
