SF Giants win pennant on Travis Ishikawa’s walkoff homer

The 2014 Giants fell out of first place with a tremendous early-summer thud. They fell out of the top wild-card spot with a tepid late summer. They kept tumbling until it was time to rise, dust themselves off and become the last National League club standing.
Mobbing was more like it, after the Giants captured their third pennant in five seasons in the most thrilling way possible Thursday night.
After Michael Morse so improbably tied Game 5 of the National League Championship Series with an eighth-inning homer off Pat Neshek, Travis Ishikawa hit a three-run homer off Michael Wacha with one out in the ninth for a 6-3 win that sent AT&T Park into a state of delirium, and the Giants to the World Series.
The Giants won their seventh pennant in San Francisco and 21st in franchise history with, of all things, the long ball.

Fun Fact: The last time @Koreanfan_KC was in Kansas City, we swept the Giants. #BringBackSungWoo

I printed up these press releases and handed them out to the crowd at the Kemper Arena. 'Nobody keeps campaign promises.' 'Nobody lowers your taxes.' 'Nobody should have that much power.' 'Nobody is in Washington working for you.' - Wavy Gravy

(5,732 posts)KC has set a post season record for winning 8 straight in the post season. Giants were the visiting team in the wild card game and won 8-0. Both teams beat the team in their respective league that finished with the best record during the regular season. Both teams win games in exciting, dramatic fashion.
Both teams are awesome.
That being said, I have been Giant fan since I was old enough to follow baseball. Maybe because I live 90 miles from SF, but more likely because my dearly departed mother was a Giant fan before they moved west from New York. I saw my first Giants game in 1958 in Seals Stadium while Candlestick was being built.
I love the Giants and I respect the KC Royals, they are a great ball club. Both teams get the most out of what they have to work with.
So, lets get it on and may the best team win. The real winner are the fans. I love baseball.

When they were playing Pittsburgh Pirates in the WILD CARD GAME, everyone said the Giants would lose... when The San Francisco Giants played the Washington Nationals, EVERYONE was saying the Giants would be eliminated, when they played the Cardinals, they said the giants were DONE FOR... bring on the KC Royals, and Yes we'll be underdogs again.

(17,107 posts)I had friends who were carping about the Giants earlier this season. I told them the Giants were going to surprise them.
Car horns, sirens, and helicopters in my Mission neighborhood. This time, I'm staying home.
I absolutely love Tony Bennett at these games. What a treasure!
We'll see what the future brings . . .

KC is going to be hard to beat through. While I don't follow baseball carefully, I've heard plenty of people talking about the Royals and what a great team they are this year. It's going to be a tough series for the Giants.

Can you survive another Series like that?
yuiyoshida
(41,831 posts)called Giants Torture and many people have mentioned it all the way back when the Pirates played the Giants in the Wild Card game. I am not sure what we can survive.. but it happened once in 2010 and 2012 so I guess we shall see. I never think that Giants fans should ever get cocky and we won't, but we have been counted out over and over again, and these guys are just amazing, especially guys like Ishikawa and others who started the year down in triple A Fresno.

(2,068 posts)I have to root for the Royals because they're in the AL. I can't stand the NL with pitchers representing almost always an automatic out when batting. Beyond all that, SF has won it most recently, so I like to root for the underdog also, even if they were an NL team. Good luck to both teams, and may it be a 7 game nail biter.
