No Turned Backs at Officer Liu’s Funeral, Bratton Asks

Source: NY Times

Police Commissioner William J. Bratton urged New York City police officers on Friday not to turn their backs when Mayor Bill de Blasio appears on Sunday at the funeral of an officer who was killed on duty in Brooklyn last month.

Thousands of police officers are expected to attend memorial services this weekend for Officer Wenjian Liu, who, with Officer Rafael Ramos, was fatally shot on Dec. 20 while the two sat in their patrol car in Bedford-Stuyvesant. A wake for Officer Liu is scheduled for Saturday, and Mr. de Blasio is to deliver the eulogy at his funeral on Sunday.

Hundreds of officers turned their backs to the mayor when he appeared at Officer Ramos’s funeral last Saturday, and police union officials have encouraged officers to repeat the show of disapproval at Officer Liu’s funeral.

5. From what I understand of their reasoning,

protesting the murders done by police is wrong, because the police are beyond reproach.
Siding with protestors, as deBlasio done, encourages attacks on the police. The deaths of those two cops are a result of diBlasio saying that maybe the police should face a bit of scrutiny when they murder people on the street. They would rather police that accidentally kill an innocent person get a 2 week paid vacation followed by some retraining and sent on their way. But since he "sides" with the protestors, he shows that he's with the animals (you know... THOSE people). Cops are the sheepdogs.
And if you think I'm exaggerating their view, read this, from the comment section on policeone:

Guys just quit being aggressive in enforcing the law. I have said it before and I will say it again. Crime is going to have to be so bad that even the cop haters will cry for more police . Sadly that is what has to happen. It's not worth getting hurt or killed for people who hate us, don't support is and the ones who are silent. Don't be the next Darren Wilson. Make your calls, be friendly and take action only when it endangers a human life. It ain't worth it anymore. I hate having to say this but the blood of one officer is not worth the price these animals extract from us. Protect your own, make it to retirement , that's it.

6. Note the overt sexism in the opening word of that policeone comment! Scary to think

I know it might sound weird to some, but even my very, VERY feminist wife does it. Maybe a regional thing?

9. Yeah, that could be. I was just struck and wonder how many of these killer cops are

females (or even participate on that policeone whinefest). I'll wager very few female cops are killing civilians by discharge of a firearm.

I completely agree that there is a culture of machismo among many of these cops. I've number a number of cops personally in my life, and about half are people who enjoy being an authoritarian.

...why is this not normal police procedure? Why is this considered "standing down?"

Because they know they're "taking action" when it's not necessary? Normally, they should not be friendly, and take indiscriminate action when they're "doing their job?"

That, I think, is exactly part of the problem....

their screaming and finding every nitpicky law to lock someone up with isn't working and is making them hated, so they are changing their ways. Didn't new york find out that with them standing down that crime didn't go up?

The funeral should be about the fallen officer, not a grudge with the mayor. It sounded to me like before the first funeral the tactic of turning their back during the funeral was made public beforehand.

at turning a dead cop's funeral into their theatre of self-righteousness, and decide that Liu's funeral is not the time or the place. DeBlasio has bent over backwards to create a dialog with he cops. He even increased funding for the dept. Some of the cops will still be jerks, no doubt. What's needed is legislation that puts review and investigation of every police killing of a citizen into the jurisdiction of an independent prosecutor appointed by the state AG.
