Qaeda Suspect Facing Trial in New York Dies in Custody

Source: NY Times

HONOLULU — A suspected Al Qaeda leader who was to go on trial in New York this month for his alleged role in the 1998 bombings of two American Embassies in East Africa died in government custody on Friday night due to complications from longstanding medical problems, federal prosecutors said.

The man, Nazih Abdul-Hamed al-Ruqai, also known as Abu Anas al-Libi, had had liver cancer. On Wednesday, he was taken to a hospital in New York from the Metropolitan Correctional Center, where he had been held since shortly after American commandos captured him in Libya in October 2013.

“We write now to inform the court that despite the care provided at the hospital, his condition deteriorated rapidly,” the United States attorney for the Southern District of New York, Preet Bharara, said in a letter to the judge overseeing the case.

Mr. Bharara said that federal marshals had been in regular contact with Mr. Ruqai’s lawyer, who he said was with Mr. Ruqai throughout the day Friday, as was an imam.

Can one give cancer to someone through injections and accelerate it? Seems a little too convenient...I bet his handlers had connections to us.

the trial really wasn't too embarrassing, costly or troublesome after all. Convenient is a euphamism.

While Al Qaeda remains a largely mythical entity, ISIS, born of displaced Sunni Iraqis snd their bombed out post-invasion, ruins-for-towns is entirely real and not going away anytime soon ... whether or not they'd even exist apart from an unwarranted and artificially inspired invasion. Results are what count most.

The more tangible armed current opposition makes the former irrelevant or even passe.

Why'd it take so long to coneect this guy to the rest of al Qaeda? The coursts are hardly too busy to have fit him in by now.

Al Q'aeda has jumped the shark and may be cancelled by the network.

Dying in the arms of a lawyer is punishment enough.

(To the esteemed lawyers on DU and elsewhere, the above is a joke and not meant to be hurtful or disrespectful. I have three close family members who are lawyers.)
