NYPD Union Rejects NYC Mayor As Deep Rift Persists

Source: Huffington Post-Reuters

By Jonathan Allen

NEW YORK, Jan 7 (Reuters) - New York City police union leaders said they rejected Mayor Bill de Blasio's leadership after emerging from a meeting with the city's police commissioner on Wednesday, suggesting the mayor's effort to mend his unusually deep rift with police was failing.

The meeting with Commissioner William Bratton came only hours after de Blasio conceded he was still unable to say whether officers in the nation's largest police force had embarked on a widespread work slowdown in the two weeks since two policemen were ambushed and killed.

The number of arrests and court summonses has plummeted across the city since the attack, with some police precincts recording a statistically improbable zero tickets for misdemeanors, suggesting many officers are ignoring all but the most urgent crimes.

"We don't believe that there is a willingness on the part of City Hall to solve these problems," Patrick Lynch, the president of the city's Patrolmen's Benevolent Association, said in a statement on Wednesday evening.

He was elected by 70% of NYC voters and will stay in his job until he's either voted out or term limited. So they better learn to live with him and do their fucking jobs.

Two quiet weeks? A statistical fluke.

Two quiet months? Now we are talking. That's data you can't deny. The NYPD is headed on the best way to prove that they are overstaffed and overzealous.

if the crime rate remains status quo, perhaps the Mayor could implement a hiring freeze. That would make them squeal.

Republicans do it all the time. Just look back to the Clinton administration and how they've paralyzed President Obama.
The mayor was elected by the vast majority. The police are servants, but behave like oppressors.

It makes zero difference if the heads of the union "reject" the leadership of the Mayor. And if he calls for cops to do the same, this is a coup. He needs to lose any police authority he might still have, including a shield and a gun.

If they won't do their jobs, then FIRE them. Sounds like de Blasio needs to Reagan them. Usually, I am all for unions because they provide really good jobs with benefits for the American people. It is the best way to organize employees, but this police union gives unions a really bad name.

Every statement he made was spiteful of the politicians and the public. He twisted logic and insulted the public while defending bad cops. While others have tried to bring the community together, he's out there stirring up emotions, putting officers at risk. It was nothing the Mayor said that incited the people, it was Lynch. But cops think he's standing up for them, so they listen.

I'm union, so I get that Lynch's job is to protect the members. And that's what the cops see, "he's got our back". But this member was caught on video doing his job terribly wrong. And everyone saw the video. So when you get away with something, maybe don't brag about it. The officer's job is already protected through the investigation, its part of the contract. The contract also dictates the process for returning to work after the no bill or acquittal. Lynch didn't need to spit vitriol at the community. Lynch didn't need to insult protesters. Lynch didn't need to get in front of cameras and declare war. These were escalations he chose to make.

And now we have the work slowdown. Police are only making arrests when necessary. So they actually admitted that patrolmen normally perform unnecessary work. And the city still standing despite the slowdown. Editorials are already suggesting a reduction in manpower.

If I was a NYPD cop, I'd be pissed as hell. Take away my belief that he's an asshole, it still remains that under Lynch's leadership the PBA has lost bargaining power and may have risked thousands of jobs... to defend one bad cop.
