House votes to gut immigration actions

Source: MSNBC

A GOP plan to gut President Obama’s unilateral actions on immigration passed through the Republican-led House Wednesday in a largely symbolic vote tied to crucial funding for the Department of Homeland Security. In a final 236-191 vote, lawmakers agreed to keep the department running through September in legislation that includes a set of amendments designed to unravel and block funding to the president’s executive measures.

Far-right elements of the party tacked the toxic amendments to dismantle not just the latest immigration actions brought by President Obama, but also a similar initiative from 2012. In sum, the amendments work to prevent millions of undocumented immigrants the right to apply for work permits and seek temporary relief from deportation.

In a nod to to ultra conservatives who led the charge against the executive actions, House Speaker John Boehner threw his full weight behind the GOP strategy to attack the measures through DHS funding.

The amendments have virtually no chance of moving forward. Though Republicans now control the Senate, legislation needs 60 votes to pass. That’s not likely to happen. Just as unlikely is for President Obama to sign a bill to walk back his own executive actions before the next phases are even implemented. The White House issued an official veto threat on Monday through the Office of Management and Budget that embraced any plan to keep the DHS funding rolling, but said it “strongly opposes” measures to would bring down the president’s immigration plan.

I just can't help it...to the Hispanic community, that are citizens...did you vote?

Because this is what you ended up with, if you did not vote. Relatives, friends that thought that they we're gonna benefit from the President's actions, should be aware of what is to come!

In a statement released by Committee Chairman Hal Rogers's (R-Ky.) office hours before Obama's scheduled national address, the committee said the primary agency responsible for implementing Obama's actions is funded entirely by user fees.

As a result, the committee said the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS) agency would be able to continue to collect fees and carry out its operations even if the government shut down.

“This agency is entirely self-funded through the fees it collects on various immigration applications," the committee said in a statement. "Congress does not appropriate funds for any of its operations, including the issuance of immigration status or work permits, with the exception of the ‘E-Verify’ program. Therefore, the appropriations process cannot be used to 'defund' the agency."

.... gave them the right to control anything done by the White House. Not only
was the bill unconstitutional, had no chance to pass the senate, and was 100%
certain to get vetoed if it ever got President Obama's desk but still they spent
the time and money on that wasted effort just for show.

What kills me is that both the House and Senate republicans have worked 24/7
to block any and everything that the President has tried to do by governing
by gridlock but in the last election they claimed that the "American People"
are tired of the gridlock so they voted for the GOP and out dirty corporate
allowed them to sell that lie unchecked.

BTW as a little kid in a very middle class neighborhood our next door neighbor's
brother was govenor of PA, Ray Shafer and he was really good guy and a republican
too but he would have no home in today's republican party.

If they'd just keep wasting time and tax dollars on crap like this we'll all survive the next two years with fewer scars. This is just the beginning though, they're going to get their feet under them at some point and start working with the senate.

Dems in the Senate show up and sit on their hands. It passes the Senate 53-0 then goes to Obama. He shoves it in a drawer without signing or vetoing it and after time runs out, it becomes law and all those Customs and Border Patrol agents get furlowed immediately. TSA agents don't show up for duty at airports. Who gets the blame?
