Dates set for Republican National Convention in Cleveland; 4-day event will run July 18-21

Source: Cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Republicans have booked their date with Cleveland.

The party's 2016 convention will start Monday, July 18, the Republican National Committee announced Wednesday from its winter meetings in San Diego.

The four-day event will end with a presidential nominee Thursday, July 21.

"I'm pleased to announce the 2016 Republican National Convention will kick off on July 18," RNC Chairman Reince Priebus said in an emailed statement. "A convention in July is a historic success for our party and future nominee.

"The convention will be held significantly earlier than previous election cycles, allowing access to crucial general election funds earlier than ever before to give our nominee a strong advantage heading into Election Day," Priebus added. "We're excited to continue working with our partners in Cleveland and we look forward to showcasing everything the city has to offer to our delegates and the world in 2016."

I thought some here my be interested in the early date of the convention. The last time a Republican convention was held this early was in 1980.

They need the extra couple of weeks to gather their funding to spread their BS far and wide. It's going to be one ugly election cycle in every contested race.

Cleveland can use the extra dough just like any city could. The stink will wear off eventually.

Saint Reagan got nominated here in D Town at the Joe Louis Arena. That's been washed off but it is a bit of a bad memory.

I recall last spring that they had really wanted it in May or June.

Republicans now expect the next nominating calendar to be wrapped up in May of 2016 with a June convention likely, allowing the nominee more time to campaign and spend money defining whoever becomes the Democratic nominee.

Having it the week they just chose is about 6 weeks earlier than the last one (which was August 27–30, 2012) and is later than they originally planned.
