Teen Bonnie and Clyde: Love-Struck Runaways Wanted for Crime Spree

Source: ABC News

Jan 15, 2015, 9:35 AM ET

Two Kentucky teenagers on the run for nearly two weeks were spotted in South Carolina though still on the loose, authorities say.

The teens – identified as Cheyenne Phillips, 13, and Dalton Hayes, 18 – were spotted at a Manning, South Carolina, Walmart Monday, the Grayson County (Kentucky) Sheriff’s Office said. Authorities say Hayes and Phillips were traveling in a stolen red 2006 Toyota Tacoma that had a firearm inside.

Phillips and Hayes have been on the run since Jan. 4. Authorities reportedly said they destroyed thousands of dollars in property by plowing through a cattle farm and doing thousands of dollars worth of damage to the first truck they stole. They then allegedly stole the Tacoma.

Hayes' mother, Tammy Martin, told ABC affiliate WHAS-TV in Louisville that she's worried what the pair might do next.

4. I've already seen that movie: "Badlands."

It's been a while since I saw it. I think I'll check it out this weekend.

Badlands (film)

Badlands is a 1973 American crime film written and directed by Terrence Malick, starring Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek. Warren Oates and Ramon Bieri are also featured. Malick has a small speaking part, although he does not receive an acting credit. The story, though fictional, is loosely based on the real-life murder spree of Charles Starkweather and his girlfriend, Caril Ann Fugate, in 1958, though such a basis was not acknowledged when the film was released.

In 1993, five years after the United States National Film Registry was established, Badlands was selected for preservation by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

ETA: when they start stealing airplanes, I'll start thinking about this guy:

Colton Harris-Moore

Colton Harris-Moore (born March 22, 1991) is an American criminal and former fugitive from Camano Island, Washington. He was charged with the thefts or destruction of hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash and property, including a small aircraft, a boat, two cars and the burglaries of at least 100 private residences in various locations around the Pacific Northwest of the United States and adjacent areas of Canada - all committed while still a teenager. He fled to the Bahamas on July 4, 2010, allegedly in a plane stolen from Bloomington, Indiana. He was indicted on July 6, 2010, by a U.S. Federal Court in Seattle, Washington, on charges of transporting another stolen aircraft in that state. Harris-Moore, still only 19, was arrested in Harbour Island, Bahamas, on July 11, 2010, after police shot out the engine of the boat in which he was attempting to flee. Two days later, he was extradited from Nassau, Bahamas, to Miami, Florida, and transferred on July 21 to the Federal Detention Center, SeaTac in Washington State. On December 16, 2011, Harris-Moore was sentenced to more than seven years in prison for dozens of consolidated charges brought against him from three different counties. On January 27, 2012, he was sentenced to six and a half years for related federal crimes.

He became known as the "Barefoot Bandit" by reportedly committing some of his crimes barefoot, once leaving behind 39 chalk footprints and the word "c'ya!". Despite the widely reported nickname, officials said that he more often wore shoes.

Cheyenne Phillips was wearing a black, long-sleeve shirt; black sweatpants; and brown and pink cowboy boots when she was seen in South Carolina. Hayes was wearing light-colored, dirty blue jeans, a University of Kentucky Wildcats short-sleeved shirt and black tennis shoes.
