Navy Commander at Guantanamo Base Fired; Probes Involves Alleged Affair, Suspicious Death

The officer in charge of the U.S. Naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, has been fired for a “loss of confidence” after he allegedly had an affair with a woman whose husband was recently found dead in the waters off the base.

Captain John Nettleton was relieved of command on Wednesday by Rear Adm. Mary M. Jackson, commander of Navy Region Southeast, “due to loss of confidence in Nettleton's ability to command,” according to a statement from the Navy.

The statement declined to give additional details because of an ongoing investigation by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS), which is focused on the death of Christopher Tur, a civilian employee at the Navy Exchange on the base who had moved to Guantanamo with his family in June 2011.

Tur, 42, was found dead in the waters off the base on the morning of January 10, a day after he had been reported missing, said Navy Region Southeast spokesman Mike Andrews. A U.S. official said there was no obvious cause of death.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (NNS) -- Capt. John R. Nettleton, commanding officer, Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, was relieved Jan. 21 by Commander, Navy Region Southeast, Rear Adm. Mary M. Jackson due to loss of confidence in Nettleton's ability to command.

Due to an ongoing NCIS investigation, it is not appropriate for the Navy to provide additional details concerning the relief.

Nettleton has been temporarily reassigned to the staff of Commander, Navy Region Southeast in Jacksonville. Capt. Scott Gray, the chief of staff to Commander, Navy Region Southeast, has been assigned as acting commanding officer.

Too bad there's no real Gibbs and Abby to solve this one. This story sounds like every other episode of the show.

3. A Few Dead Men

I wonder where this will lead. It's interesting how quickly NCIS acted on "adultery" as a crime under the US Military Code, whereas systematic torture and mysterious deaths of inmates gets a pass. My guess, it'll just get swept under the rug now that Nettleton has been relieved and there won't be any probative link discovered to the murdered husband. I guess we'll see.
