Christie names emergency management team for Atlantic City

Governor Christie, declaring at a meeting in Atlantic City Thursday that "I can't wait any longer," named corporate finance attorney as the struggling city's emergency manager and Kevyn Orr — a key player in Detroit's bankruptcy saga — as a consultant.

Christie, speaking to a group of 30 elected officials, casino industry executives, and other interested parties, stressed to Mayor Don Guardian, one of the attendees, that the move was not a reflection on him or on the City Council.

"We are digging out of an enormous hole," Christie said of the city that experienced the loss of four of its 12 casinos in 2014, and which has Revel and Trump Taj Mahal struggling to survive. "But this is not the end of the world. None of this is unfixable if we use our political will."

Bridges are falling down, roads are costing BILLIONS, corruption is rampant in his administration, taxes are skyrocketing, and yet he's still throwing money at his casino buddies in Atlantic City. He's already given Revel a quarter BILLION dollars and it folded in about a year.

Chris, the casino industry in Atlantic City is dying. Face reality and GOVERN YOUR STATE, there's more to it than one small city!

have less and less money to gamble with, the pool of suckers is steadily evaporating. The one percenters don't have to gamble - the SCOTUS and the GOP just hand them the jackpot without ever having to put a quarter in a slot!

The problem is the opening of new casinos up and down the eastern seaboard is draining gamblers from AC. And they're all doing very well. I have several choices much closer now.

He has been on fund raising and other tours for over 5 years now and counting.
So he is a part time governor getting full pay and then decides to outsource his responsibilities to a Wall Street crony, all the while, he was given the opportunity to work on a tunnel to have high speed rail, high paying jobs, ect...., what we have in the state is a junior Walker (Wisconsin) and Snyder (Michigan) wanna be, this is so right wing republican, whine about government but then don't govern, look for blame.
But we can' t forget that when the casino's came to the state they were complaining about there taxes and riparian rights, so when they got tax breaks (casino's) they shifted the property tax to the home owners to make those that were on water ways pay the same riparian rights.
We are all waiting to see which one of his cronies flips on bridge gate and the Northeast extension in Orange and the use of Sandy money on that highway system and its Christie involvement, there are still homes not being rebuilt from Sandy, and this right wing hypocrite wants a emergency consultant.

Riparian rights and duties involve owners of waterfront property, but I'm not sure what you mean by "paying riparian rights". Unless you just mean that casinos on the waterfront got reduced taxes and other waterfront land owners were forced to pick up the slack.

The casino's filled in the land (wet lands, I might add) to build the casino's in Atlantic city, there was no place to put them on the shore side, so they came up with this scheme to build on the wet lands, so when the tax bill came due they went to the legislature and said hey--boys and girls, you have all of these homes along the shore and in the inlets that have been filled in to build homes and businesses(note some have not), but we want you to use the "MAPS" from the 1600's and 1700's to find out who, what and when and where the land has been developed and what it looked like back in the good old days, and since you are the only going to make us pay for this we are going to challenge you and make everyone pay, but since we got all of these incentives from infrastructure and sewer and water and other tax breaks we want to have the home owners and the public citizens in New Jersey pick up the slack at a different rate, so they did.
So the Vegas casino's and oligarpghy sold the idea, and everyone bought the golden fleece award, we will put our casino's up and they will come---not quite, when the business model is for finite product.
Just to add a caveat to this, lets say you have a dock, and you lose the dock lets say in a hurricane , you the home owner are charged a fee to have the dock brought back if they can find its right home, but if it gets lost you have to replace the dock (no ifs or ands about this), and since it sticks out into the bay you are charged riparian rights for the dock, nice huh.
So lets say some person decides to sell the home and has not or did not know about the riparian right, you have to pay all fees associated with the riparian rights and the new owner has to pay for the rights again all because of how the taxes were structured for the casino's.
So all of the citizens of New Jersey are picking up the tab on the bankrupt casinos; like Trumps casino, and, he walks away, gets another gig on another oligarpghy corporation called the Apprentice, but leaving the town holding the proverbial bag, and he made millions on the scam---nice huh.

....that two more casinos (that would bring the total to 6, leaving only 6) are on the verge of closing.

Casino revenue is half of what it was about five years ago, what can this new guy do? What happened to "let them help themselves", the refrain we hear about poor people and unemployed?

As a resident of NJ back in the '70s when Brendan Byrne proposed legalizing casinos to "rebuild Atlantic City", now 40 years later the city outside of the boardwalk and a few streets east of the boardwalk haven't changed one bit. There has been no rebuilding or resurrection, just billions of dollars pocketed by the casino owners - none of which are NJ corporations.

This has been a huge failure.

10. Kevyn Orr came to Detroit and made a lot of money.
Thu Jan 22, 2015, 03:04 PM
Jan 2015

For himself and his buddies in the law business. All city government retirees were forced to take a cut in their pensions, he was given the power to rewrite contracts, he almost got away with selling off priceless works of art from the DIA, and he did manage to get some of Detroit's creditors to take a fraction of what they were owed. Legal costs alone were around $175 million, which was more than the deficit in the year bankruptcy was approved. There was quite a controversy about billing for legal services, some of it was pretty outrageous. Kevyn Orr was paid somewhere between $300,000 and $500,000 a year for his services.

That said, the city's finances have been a mess for years. Corruption, waste, fraud, were rampant. But as usual, the people whose fault it wasn't got the blame and had to take the hit.
