Obamacare cost to be 20% less than forecast, budget office says

Source: LA Times

President Obama's healthcare law will cost about 20% less over the next decade than originally projected, the Congressional Budget Office reported Monday, in part because lower-than-expected healthcare inflation has led to smaller premiums.

So far, the number of uninsured Americans has dropped by about 12 million. By the end of 2016, 24 million fewer Americans will lack insurance, the nonpartisan budget office forecast.

Excluding immigrants in the country illegally, who are not eligible for coverage under the law, only about 8% of Americans under age 65 will lack insurance by the time Obama leaves office, the budget office's latest report on the law estimates.

Of the Americans who will remain uninsured once enrollment has fully ramped up, the budget office estimates that about 30% will be people in the U.S. without legal authorization. An additional 10% will be people who are too poor to buy insurance on the exchanges, but who live in states that have not expanded Medicaid. The remaining 60% will be people who choose to not buy insurance or enroll in Medicaid.

Obama is going to be able to look back and know he helped so many people to have better lives; I hope that makes all the awful things he's had to put up with worth it. He made a huge difference, and is truly a hero.

Even with slower enrollment in private insurance, CBO said higher-than-expected enrollment in the Medicaid program for the poor would help Obamacare reduce the number of uninsured Americans by 19 million this year and by 24 million to 27 million people each year from 2016 onwards.

Medicaid would cost the federal government $59 billion more than expected over the next 10 years as a result of higher enrollment under Obamacare, CBO said. REUTERS

People are getting insurance. But it's costing alot, and you have to keep a score card going to tell how that's going. We've got people covered, we still have to make health CARE affordable.

Believe that the ONLY way to reduce health care costs and make it affordable, is to reduce chronic illness. Chronic illness is to blame for skyrocketing costs. So if we want affordable health care we have to take responsibility for our own health. Until we wake up and address this, there is no magic wand...no miracle insurance plan or health plan that can lower premiums significantly and stay there. That is just a band-aid providing temporary relief to a serious wound that is not healing, but getting WORSE. This is a long term fight. While we are seeing some significant improvements, it will still take years to get our health care costs under control. ACA is the first program that attempts to reduce chronic illness. There is no easy and immediate fix and ACA is NOT a cure, but it is at least taking us in the right direction.

Probably best not to take your advice from the people profiting from the system.

In many other countries, they pay whole integer multiples less than we do for health care, and it's not because they are that much healthier. It is because their governments have gotten control of the costs of health care. ACA didn't do much to do that. It just federalized the regulation of health insurance.

Wow! let's hope those repubs repeal it right away!

For that matter they should impeach Obama as well. Doing something good for the average American, well, that's treason!

The Governors of these states, like mine (Wisconsin), need to be booted out of office.
