NYC, Boston ban road travel as huge storm hits

Source: USA Today

John Bacon

A historic snowstorm blasted its way through the Northeast on Monday, bringing with it havoc, flight cancellations, school closings and worry that up to 3 feet of snow and hurricane-force winds might be on the horizon.

Both New York City and Boston took the rare step of banning all forms of travel due to the storm.

"It's dangerous out there now. It's only going to become more dangerous,'' New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Monday evening as he announced a total ban on travel on any road after 11 p.m. in 13 counties including the city, suburbs and Long Island.

A blizzard warning was issued for both metro areas and more than 6,100 flights had been canceled before the storm cranked up. The storm will impact more than 40 million people, the National Weather Service reported.

maybe we'll just have a delayed opening. Of course this depends on when transit starts to run again.

Accuweather as of 9pm though: http://www.accuweather.com/en/weather-news/major-blizzard-to-shut-down-bo/41180972

-snip-
An all-out blizzard will slam the New York City area and New England Monday night through Tuesday, bringing many communities to a standstill.
Flight cancellations are mounting and travel bans and state of emergencies are being issued ahead of the major blizzard that will halt travel, cut power and endanger anyone who ventures out into the storm.

Radar shows light precip but a hell of a lot of it coming this way off the ocean.

10. With the winds, drifts would make travel too dangerous

going around the streets with megaphones telling everyone to be off the streets by 11pm or they would be towed. Looking out my window now there are almost no cars on the road and I live right in the city. It doesn't even really seem like the worst of it has hit yet, but I think people are taking it seriously.
