Duplicate .... War Begets War: It’s Not about Islam; It Never Was

Sorry Tace.

It is still not about Islam, even if the media and militants attacking western targets say so. Actually, it never was. But it was important for many to conflate politics with religion; partly because it is convenient and self-validating.

First, let’s be clear on some points. Islam has set in motion a system to abolish slavery over 1,200 years before the slave trade reached its peak in the western world.

Sure, the pornographic satire of Charlie Hebdo and its targeting of Prophet Mohammed was mentioned, but little was said, by Black, or the many others who were quick to link the subject to “7th century Islam”, to the hideous wars and their horrible, pornographic manifestations of torture, rape and other unspeakable acts; acts that victimized millions of people; Muslim people. Instead, it about western art and Muslim intolerance. The subtle line was: yes, indeed, it is a “clash of civilizations”.

Did any of these “intellectuals” pause to think that maybe, just maybe, the violent responses to demeaning Islamic symbols reflect a real political sentiment, say for example, a collective feeling of humiliation, hurt, pain and racism that extend to every corner of the globe?

2. A religion is neither more nor less than what its adherents do in its name.

Quoting the beatitudes doesn't undo fire-breathing preachers.

Quoting the Koran doesn't undo how the religion is practiced today in Saudi Arabia, as a particularly bad example.

The Muslims have not reconciled their religion to capitalism the way that the Jewish and Christian religions have.

4. polly7: I'm Glad To See The Story Getting Attention

I see that your zcomm.org pickup has gotten more recs and comments than my post from World News Trust, and likely will end up with more views on DU. (zcomm.org is a very highly regarded site established by Howard Zinn, and Noam Chomsky's favorite place to publish. Chomsky recommended it to me as the best source for his stories.)

The whole idea of posting on DU is to get the story out to as many readers as possible. This is a particularly good Ramzy Baroud story. I'm glad to see it getting the attention it deserves. --Tace : )

6. I think it might just be getting more attention because it was posted later....

I was going to delete it, but saw someone had tweeted(?) it (I'm not a Twitter person so don't know what happens when something disappears form the original link), but I also agree about zcomm.org and its contributors. I really don't know anything about WNT, but Ramzy Baroud is always a great read, imo, no matter where he's found. Thanks Tace for the kind reply. I'm glad it's getting twice the looks .

Yet, I'm no Howard Zinn... and zcomm is in an excellent class of its own. --Tace

That's just fantastic ... I'm very impressed! I'm so sorry, there are so many sites I know nothing about ... thank you for a brand new one to explore. Just great!
