A documentary directed by Léa Pool. 98 minutes. Opens Feb. 3 at Yonge-Dundas, Carlton and Kingsway. PG

Pink ribbons leave some seeing red in Quebec-based director Léa Pool’s compelling documentary about breast cancer fundraising. It comes to theatres after its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last fall.

Pink Ribbons Inc. is a quietly effective, often emotionally searing doc that questions how far the millions raised through marketing campaigns tied up with pink ribbons go toward stopping the disease that kills 59,000 North Americans annually, let alone finding a cause.

Generous fundraisers are lauded for their contribution, but cautioned to “think before you pink” while corporations who make profits from pink merchandise are treated with disdain.

“If people actually knew what was happening they would be really pissed off,” says Barbara Brenner, executive director of Breast Cancer Action San Francisco. “They should be.”
