Stories from the Edge: PTSD and Politics

By Dr. Brian Carr
Psychologist

What can I tell you about 367 interviews with our veterans?

Since 2009 I have worked in collecting the stories of military veterans as a function of my providing consultation services to the VA healthcare system. Over these years I have traveled many times to Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas and elsewhere gathering the stories of our warriors. I work to gain a sense of the life moments that these men and women encounter in their service to protect our country and way of life.

Do you want to know what are the outer markers of a life experience? Can you imagine the worse possible situation and consider the effect? How can a person become so damaged in a moment that the rest of their lives they are impaired?

As I am given the opportunity to share in the recollection of our warriors I am changed. When I listen to those political candidates who would want to lead us I consider the question of whether they actually appreciate the sacrifice of our veterans in the causes that they scream about.

Do those seeking the highest office of our land really understand the horrors of war?
