Statistics on the cost of gun violence
http://smartgunlaws.org/costs-of-gun-violence-statistics/"Researchers conservatively estimate that gun violence costs the American economy at least $229 billion every year, including $8.6 billion in direct expenses such as for emergency and medical care. Gun violence costs more than $700 per American every year, more than the total economic cost of obesity and almost as much as the annual price tag for the entire Medicaid program."

(20,616 posts)Other than the direct medical costs, I wonder what goes into the calculations. Here are things I can think of:
Costs of premature death - survivors benefits to spouses and children. Lost tax revenue from the deceased.
Costs of disability - SSI and SSDI to the permanently disabled as well as to their caregivers in some cases. Cost of medical care via Medicare. Lost tax revenue from those who cannot be gainfully employed in any way, and lost tax revenue from family members who care for them full time.
Costs of law enforcement, prosecution and incarceration - nothing is as quick and effective a killer as a gun. You've got to figure that at least some of the murders would not have happened at all if the shooter hadn't been able to shoot.
Those are just the costs I can think of. Please add to the list.
I can't help but think that an awful lot of the reason that people aren't willing to support gun control is that a disproportionate number of victims are , especially young black men. And I'm an old white female, just so you know.

Thanks for the stats. They are fucking hard to come by. Bookmarked.

(20,616 posts)had to pay, directly, $700. A family with 2 parents and 3 kids gets their "Freedom bill" for $3500, every single year.
