Woody Guthrie Wrote of His Contempt for His Landlord, Donald Trump’s Father
Last edited Sun Mar 13, 2016, 12:02 PM - Edit history (1)
My legacy has its roots in my fathers legacy. - Donald Trump
More than a half-century ago, the folk singer Woody Guthrie signed a lease in an apartment complex in Brooklyn. He soon had bitter words for his landlord: Donald J. Trumps father, Fred C. Trump.
Mr. Guthrie, in writings uncovered by a scholar working on a book, invoked Old Man Trump while suggesting that blacks were unwelcome as tenants in the Trump apartment complex, near Coney Island.
He thought that Fred Trump was one who stirs up racial hate, and implicitly profits from it, the scholar, Will Kaufman, a professor of American literature and culture at the University of Central Lancashire in Britain, said in an interview.
Mr. Kaufman said he came across Mr. Guthries writings about Fred Trump while he was doing research at the Woody Guthrie Centers archives in Oklahoma. He wrote about his findings last week for The Conversation, a news website.
In December 1950, Mr. Guthrie signed a lease at the Beach Haven apartment complex, Mr. Kaufman wrote in his piece. Soon, Mr. Guthrie was lamenting the bigotry that pervaded his new, lily-white neighborhood, he wrote, with words like these:
I suppose
Old Man Trump knows
Just how much
Racial Hate
he stirred up
In the bloodpot of human hearts
When he drawed
That color line
Here at his
Eighteen hundred family project
Mr. Guthrie even reworked his song I Aint Got No Home into a critique of Fred Trump, according to Mr. Kaufman:
Beach Haven aint my home!
I just cant pay this rent!
My moneys down the drain!
And my soul is badly bent!
Beach Haven looks like heaven
Where no black ones come to roam!
No, no, no! Old Man Trump!
Old Beach Haven aint my home!

This Press Kills Fascists is a publishing company started by author T.A. Sedlak in 2009. Following in the footsteps of Mark Twain, James Joyce, Bernard Shaw, and Virginia Wolff, among others, T.A. chose to go the route of self-publishing. Unlike those named, T.A., however, chose self-publishing for his debut work, Anarcho Grow. To promote a work of literature properly, one has to care a great deal about it, and no one cares about their work more than the author.
When thinking of a name for his company, T.A. turned to one of his favorite poets, Woody Guthrie, the traveling troubadour of social justice. A folk song is whats wrong and how to fix it or it could be, said Woody. Not all art need be political, however, but is essential that much is. Woody Guthrie wrote two novels, one hundred seventy four columns for Peoples World (a socialist paper), nearly 3,000 songs, and countless unpublished letters, poems, and prose. Enough of that work was political that he became an icon for social change. This Press Kills Fascists guarantees that its books will be about whats wrong and how to fix it. A press dedicated to social change as Guthrie was.
This Press Kills Fascists promises to publish works that bleed social and political change, the kind that Woody would stand behind. It also promises to promote them in a way the works deserve, a way the author would be proud of.

(2,388 posts)6. Apparently Trump's Grandpappy wasn't much better - "Poodle Dog"
?w=740
Donald Trump's grandfather, Frederick or Frederich Trump, made his money from operating a decadent restaurant and hotel during the Gold Rush at Klondike in the Yukon.
That's a nice way of saying it.
"Trump made his first fortune operating boom-town hotels, restaurants and brothels", is more accurate, according to the CBC news report, "'Donald Trump's grandfather ran Canadian brothel during gold rush', author says".
Author Gwenda Blair simply wrote, ""The bulk of the cash flow came from the sale of liquor and sex."
Trump's grandfather was born in Germany, to parents who were employed by a vineyard. He moved to New York City in 1885 where he became a barber.
After six years of this, Frederick Trump moved across the United States to Seattle, Washington, where he owned and operated what he referred to as a "decadent restaurant" that was actually called "Poodle Dog" in Seattle's red light district.
Interestingly, the name and concept that had already been established in San Francisco. (He named his restaurant after a dog but would later make money selling horse meat) Around this time Frederick Trump became a US citizen.
A Yukon Sun Newspaper writer described his business: "For single men the Arctic has excellent accommodations as well as the best restaurant in Bennett, but I would not advise respectable women to go there to sleep as they are liable to hear that which would be repugnant to their feelings and uttered, too, by the depraved of their own sex".
Trump moved to Monte Cristo, Wash. in 1894, and then four years later, shortly after the Klondike gold rush began, he relocated again to Bennett, British Columbia. Here he ran the "Actic Restaurant and Hotel". He would next build the "White Horse restaurant and Inn" in Whitehorse, Yukon.
An article published this year by Politico, explains that Frederick Trump sold off his investments and returned to Germany in 1901, as he sensed the end of the gold rush and a subsequent end to prostitution.
