Merkley endorsed the other candidate--that tends to knock you out of the running for the #2 slot.

In fact, most often it was the one who opposed the nominee who was the running mate.

Historically, there was a time when the VP would have been the one who came in second in the election -- regardless of party.

What having the "winning" candidate picking the vp means is that in the case of succession, the president could be someone who never received a single vote of the people.

What does an endorsement mean in terms of job qualification?

Is there something of substance that you don't like about Merkley? Just wondering.

Seems to me he would be a great choice. He's definitely an up and coming Democratic leader in the Senate.
